> Golf may have a smaller fan base, but fans of golf tend to be much wealthier than fans of NASCAR. Demographics matter.

Yep- You’ll notice that the products advertised stick in the professional services and luxury vehicles arena for golf, while nascar decals trumpet mostly widely-available consumer products and the ads are more middle-class. Golf has the added “escapist” feeling and gentle production values, they are going for the audience that might shit the hepplewhite chaise if a NASCAR race came on the plasma.
I have seen and enjoyed NASCAR races, but like hockey, I don’t think it plays well on TV. The NFL has done such a good job of making the game TV-friendly that it dominates the conversation. The NFL on TV is preferable to live at this point- there’s no other sport I’d say that about.

It’s probably not irrelevant that fantasy football is much more accessible and enjoyable for armchair athletes than other fantasy sports- that increases regular peoples’ stake in NFL games.

Well, in baseball, you have a roster of 25.

8 of those guys are everyday starters, so every fan knows them. 5 of them are starting pitchers, and every fan knows them. 2 of them are closers, and every fan knows them.

Well, every fan of the TEAM. I’m a huge baseball fan and I can’t tell you every team’s starter, just my own (Toronto) team, and probably the Yankees because the Blue Jays play them all the time and they’re famous.

I have some trouble believing hard core football fans can’t do the same. I’ve known lots of folks who loved their NFL teams as much as I love my Blue Jays and they could easily name the team roster.
