Are there any cultures without music?

I am not seeing why that is a corollary at all, let alone a reasonable one.

I am also not sure I believe that there is such a thing as an independently evolved culture, apart from that of the very first humans… But even that was presumably developed out of the proto-culture of our ape ancestors, who might well have had (as many animal species do - wolves howling at the moon, and such) a form of proto-music.

The first thing that came to my mind when reading this thread was the fact that the Taliban authorities crack down on music.

I found a web page about it, though it says they permit certain types of music.

The censorship of music in Afghanistan “The people of Afghanistan under Taliban rule are subjected to an extreme form of music censorship. The only musical activity permitted is the singing of certain types of religious song and Taliban ‘chants’.”

“Forbidding music” is not the same as “without music”, and the former is not what the OP is asking about.

The simple answer to the OP’s question is “no”. There is no human culture that doesn’t music.

And for that matter, I think forbidding types of music must be universal as well. We have Plato’s written complaints about the music those youngsters like and how it ruins their moral character.

If you’re interested in contemporary Inuit music, check out these two Canadian artists: Tanya Tagaq (sample: “Force”), from Nunavut, and Elisapie Isaac (sample: “Turning My Back”), from Nunavik in northern Quebec.

Tagaq, in particular, invented a style of solo throat singing that she uses in her tracks, often combined with non-Inuit musical influences.

The Hadza, one of the last hunter-gatherer societies in Africa, do not share several of those ‘cultural universals’ with others. They have no marriage ceremony, no funerals, no religion, no shamans, and few personal possessions. And yet they sing and dance.

Just checked out her website: Tanya Tagaq | IsumaTV to hear a sample of her music and all I can say is HOLY SHIT that is scary!! (yet at the same time I also find it kind of erotic. Yeah, I’m a sick puppy)

They may not have a marriage ceremony but I would be surprised if they have no concept of marriage at all, that is, a pair-bond.

I read through the article linked and I agree. One of the men (in his 60’s) has been with only one woman for his whole life. The author describes the more usual situation as “serial monogamy” with changes in partners four or five times over a lifetime. Sounds like marriage in America to me, just without the ceremonies and lawyers.

The author also claims that they have no concept of the afterlife… but later says the Hadza do a dance in which they believe the spirits of the deceased are present.

They have no religion… but they do believe the sun is God.

And the author says that the tribe has no leaders… but the group the author visits is named after one guy. This is the same the guy who can “suggest” they all go baboon hunting in the middle of the night and who gets to eat the most prized part of the baboon even when someone else killed it.

While the culture is very different from ours, and quite fascinating, I don’t think they’re missing any of the universal elements.
