Are there any functional Yugos left?

No-no-no! You break it in half! Then you havetwo pieces of junk.

Man, saw that exhibit when it was on tour in DC. Loved the “telephone” …

I think this thread is based on a faulty premise. Asking whether there “[a]re any functional Yugos left” implies that there were some “functional” Yugos to start with. I would take issue with this assumption.

There was a Yugo driving along in front of me the other day in the outskirts of Cork City … it was over 10 years old and running fairly smoothly by the looks of it. I had no idea the were the butt of American jokes, I suppose they’re held in the same regard as Ladas were in the UK 20 years ago

Ok. I know Yugos are rare & crappy, but try this out for size. Anyone here ever have a Daihatsu? I had a little 1988 three cyl HB is the type I had, I think it was called Charade. Anyways, I renamed it “Sparky” as it closer to a dog in size than an actuall car. Not very fast, but at $275, it was bar none the best value per dollar car I ever had. Loaded, I mean every option except PW, PL, AT, tach, PM, passenger mirror, matching colour body parts, and a raear hatch that closed all the way. But, I did get 40-45 mpg most of the time, and that little car Never broke on me. Also, weighing in at just ove 1600lbs, it was actually a lot of fun to let it’s 108hp/98tq motor loose on the streets of Pasadena.

Well, I never see them anymore, maybe once or twice a year if that. I know that company is tsill in production overseas, but not here anymore.

Cheers

      • There’s a guy in my neighborhood with one that’s still in perfect condition, no rust, original paint, still shiny, etc. I live in the central IL salt belt and I remember most Yugos rusting up pretty quickly; I have no idea how he saved his. I tend to think he bought it as a novelty as I only see him drive it on nice days during the summer. The guy’s middle-aged, an AF officer, lives in a middle-income single-family-dwelling subdivision, he may not be rich but he doesn’t look poor.

-It is very small, but those new Honda gas/electric Insights or whatevers are even smaller. The Yugo stands rather upright, where the Insight is about the same length and width but its roof is several inches lower.

Get this, I’ve seen a customized Yugo! Yes! And in the past five years! Did anyone else notice that when NATO went after Yugoslavia one of the first things they took out was the Yugo factory! They even bombed it multiple times! Guess someone in target selection really hated that car!

Some other uses for a Yugo.

A guy who lives a ways down the highway has a bunch of em and I see one running around once in a while, too. Parts are as easy to find as dialing a toll-free phone number to C. Obert & Co. in the Bay Area. (He carrys my Italian goodies and I hear he does Yugos, too)

I drove a Yugo around LA once. No worse than a Geo Metro or Chevy Sprint. For the money, you can hardly go wrong.

Fagjunk Theology: Not just for sodomite propagandists anymore.

ZMW is coming out with a new Yugo, incidentally.

I OWNED A YUGO

There, I’ve admitted it. What a weight off of my shoulders. I’ve been avoiding this thread since I saw it pop up a few days ago, wondering if I could bare the shame of admitting I bought one right off of the lot - brand spanking new.

We were temporarily living on the east coast, family was deep south and I needed a cheap way to get home to see them. I could afford it and it got great gas milage. We lived there for 18 months and it made many 10 hours trips on I-10. It was fire engine red with tan interior.

After moving back home I kept the car for two more years and donated it to Mr. Adoptamom’s lead carpenter as a Christmas bonus. Last I heard, the police dept of a podunk town near here had the car in it’s impound yard because the carpenter I donated it to didn’t feel it was worth carrying insurance on - but it still ran and looked great!

There, I’ve admitted it, and it felt good to unburden myself.

FWIW, my car history is: Escort, Cadillac (used), Yugo, Mercedes (used), Chevy Van, Nissan Sentra. I have eclectic tastes

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!
