I very much enjoy reading David French in the Times, unfortunately paywalled*. A sincerely religious conservative, he writes well and hates, hates, hates Trump. Also all the evangelical MAGAts. I used to read Ross Douthat, also a religious non-MAGAt, but I can no longer stand him and have given up. Recently, David Frum seems to have jumped off the MAGAT train, although I don’t much care for him anyway.
*He also has a mailing list, but I don’t know how to get on it.
John Podhoretz is another conservative commentator who’s firmly anti-Trump (in contrast with his late father Norman).
I admire David Frum, who was a Bush speechwriter and has written for The Atlantic forever. But he is a Canadian conservative and would probably not be considered conservative by many MAGA supporters.
Note that I have seen at least one “friend” who was a liberal, convert to a Obama hating MAGA as he listened to a Conservative Talk Radio station. He was pretty intelligent also.
I would second this. I read the National Review and agree with many, but not all, of the positions taken by many of their writers. They are generally anti-Trump fwiw.
I think this is a really interesting point, an establishment democrat is more reminiscent of a traditional conservative than any republican. I think it also speaks to the disconnect that the younger generation are feeling with political representation.
This is very true, reactionary and sensationalist commentary is likely what the big conservative think tanks look for these days, the reasoned position isn’t super marketable i suppose.

The Atlantic is a good example because they try to find commentators from as wide a political range as possible. It is not easy.

As to whether Williamson is any good, I don’t know how to measure that. I suppose he is a good conservative when it comes to writing sentences.

Are you perhaps thinking of the ultra-right Newsmax? NewsNation is a different network that is about as center-left as CNN, a good fit for today’s George Will.
I agree and that was actually the first name that came to mind. The fact that he was a speechwriter for George W Bush is a bit of a strike against him, but he is in fact rational and even-handed and I’d consider him a moderate conservative. He’s a senior editor at the Atlantic but also a writer and commentator and does the talk show circuit.
Frum was born in Toronto and is Canadian-American. His sister Linda is also conservative, but from a Canadian perspective, and sits in the Senate of Canada representing the Conservative Party. Their mother, Barbara Frum, was a renowned journalist and interviewer who worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and hosted several national shows on both radio and television. Unlike the kids, she kept her politics to herself and strove for impartiality in her journalistic work.
