Cyndy Lauper singing ‘At Last’ sends chills down my spine. I listen to music channels on cable tv and hear occasional standards and am surprised to see a singer like Don Henley . Or Rod Stewart (though if he’s a ‘great singer’, it’s debatable.) At Christmas, I love to hear ‘O Holy Night’ by Celine Dion or Michael Crawford. The way each of them can hit that last high note is breathtaking. ---

Yeah, I was going to suggest her. I’d add Jane Monheit and Diana Krall for jazz singers. For a terrific blues singer, try Ruby Wilson, who was known as the Queen of Beale Street. ---

This is a place where I think the current use of autotune hurts certain artists because their true vocal skills get hidden in the effort to make everything sound perfect. ---

So many names here that I don’t recognize at all, some I recognize but couldn’t match to a voice. And I admit, I really like the standards of the 40s and 50s, so that may color my perception. I loved the duets of Tony Bennett/Lady Gaga as well as some of her solo stuff. I will be sampling some of the folks listed here. Obviously by limiting my listening to the times I drive minimizes what I’m exposed to. I promise it’s not a case of “kids these days…” It seems I’m missing out on some good stuff.
