Do Pancho Villa movies not count, too? If they do, I keep wanting to rent “And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself” with Antonio Banderes. It just looks fun.

Trust me - I am irrational about Antonio Banderas. I have seen some amazingly shitty movies for him. Don’t waste your time. It’s got some good parts, yeah, but it really isn’t worth it.

Well, it wasn’t a very cinematic war. Take the final battle of Cahuenga (which occurred after the war had ended, but they didn’t know). Both armies faced each other in the area of Los Angeles where Universal Studios is now located. The combat consisted of one canon being fired, which hit a donkey. Then Mexico surrendered.

You could hardly get more cinematic than the Battle of Chapultepec, which included the storming of Chapultepec Castle by US Marines, the martyrdom of six teenage Mexican cadets who defended their position to the death against overwhelming odds (the Ninos Heroes already mentioned by jayjay), and the mass execution by hanging for desertion of 50 members of the St. Patrick Brigade.

But an interesting one for me was Old Gringo with Gregory Peck and Jane Fonda and Jimmy Smits as Villa . . .

In Old Gringo, Smits did not play Villa, he played one of Villa’s generals, Tomas Arroyo.
