Are there any reasons to reject Graham Platner in Maine

That is such a low bar it’s a trench.

I despise Collins. But should we really overlook a true nazi sympathizer because they have a “D” after their name? I haven’t studied up on Platner other than what I’ve seen here. He seems to espouse fairly good policies. Is that enough to overcome whatever caused this problem (judgment or worse).?

If I believe he lies about his tattoo, why should I believe anything else he talks about?

So did John Fetterman and look where that got us.

The more I read about this race, the worse it gets. Janet Mills is 78! And Platner, nazi or not, has a pretty thin resume for a U.S Senate candidate. The seat is there for the taking, but the field is deeply disappointing.

I agree with that. Mills seems fine, but I’ve come around to the belief that it is far superior for candidate to be under the age of 65 when they begin their career in the Senate.(or presidency.)

It’s not disqualifying per se, but I don’t like it

In the end, I suppose the Maine voters will have to decide if they’d rather chance with a transitional one-termer and hope that gives time for a good, CLEAN new prospect to rise.

IBF to me it looked more Fetterman was more a product of the conventional wisdom “run someone who can win”. You’d have had a hard time running a real open Prog in that race.

And before someone asks the “I” stands for nothing other than characters dragged from editing that I did not notice I left here instead of changing to a T

Conor Lamb was Fetterman’s main primary opponent, and he had won close elections in a very swingy congressional district, so there’s no reason to think he couldn’t have won the Senate seat. I think this is an example of an all-too-common error that Maine primary voters seem poised to commit yet again: passing up a normal, competent, professional-presenting candidate in favor of a brash, quirky one who seems more “authentic,” only to discover that the latter is scandal-prone and / or just plain flaky. (See also Gillum vs. Graham in the 2018 Florida governor’s race – the one that ended up giving us DeSantis – and maybe also Kyrsten Sinema, although I can’t remember what her primary opposition looked like.)

Sinema won the Democratic primary with nearly 80% of the vote over Deedra Abboud, then won the general election over Martha McSally by 60,000 votes out of 1.5 million. Since Abboud was Muslim I am sure she would have lost against McSally.

I dont think that tattoo makes him a Nazi Sympathizer, especially as his politics seem Liberal. I mean I used to know a bunch of guys who dressed up in WW2 costumes for their play wars and etc, and one had a complete Nazi SS uniform. And he wore a yarmulka user the Nazi hat.

Mind you that tat showed serious poor judgement issues.

He- at least- caucuses with the dems and votes for Bidens, etc Judge choices.

If we get 51 Democratic Caucus Senators, and good things happen- even if 2-3 of them sometimes crosses the aisle.

It looks like either him- poor tat and all (which he finally covered up)- or Collins.

Sad.

How do you know his politics?

How do you know this?

All we actually know of his politics, aside from what he’s told us, is that he’s the kind of person who proudly wears Nazi symbols for over a decade. And as for what he’s told us, well, the kind of person who proudly wears Nazi symbols can’t be relied upon to be honest. It seems just as likely to me that he’d wear the D label just long enough to get elected, and then suddenly, oops, he’s voting with the Republicans on every single issue.

Or we could, you know, and bear with me here, vote for the candidate that isn’t a Nazi or a Republican. Yeah, her being 78 years old isn’t ideal, but is it really worse than the alternatives?

Yes, while not ideal, a lot of people that age are still quite up to the task ahead of them. I’d vote for Robert Reich in a heartbeat if he were running for anything. Or Bernie. Hell, my boss is turning 81 next month and he’s as sharp as a tack.

He’s talking about Fetterman there, not Platner.

I was talking about Sen. Fetterman. Who is one of my least Favorite Dem Senators, which puts him ahead of at least 53 GOP senators. Sorry if I didnt make myself clear.

If I lived in Maine, that is exactly what I would be doing, of course.

Is Platner a Nazi? I don’t know; he may very well not be. His publicly-stated political platform is certainly liberal.

If the only issue were that he has/had a tattoo which he didn’t realize was actually a Nazi symbol, I might be willing to chalk it up to youthful stupidity and naivete…but as noted in this thread, there are several reports which have come to light, which indicate that he knew full well that it was a totenkopf years ago.

There’s also the issue, as noted in this thread, of being friendly with, stating admiration for, and retweeting the posts of, anti-semites.

Polls indicate he has a pretty sizeable lead over Mills, despite all this. Were I a Maine voter, I’d be very hesitant to vote for a guy for Senate with this kind of backstory, and his evasiveness about it. And, given Platner’s very slim experience in politics, mostly on the very local level, I’d have to be very comfortable with everything else about him in order to feel that he’s qualified to be a Senator.

His publicly-stated political platform is that we must fight “the oligarchy”. How much do you want to bet that he considers “the oligarchy” synonymous with “the Jews”?

That seems entirely obvious, yeah

Yeah, that bothers me, but maybe he just didnt have the bucks to cover it up?

He comes from an extremely wealthy family, but I imagine you already knew that’s just grasping at straws.
