Are there any reasons to reject Graham Platner in Maine

That’s a lie on the same level as my answering the casual cheery greeting of “Hi, how are you?” with “Fine” even on the die my dog died. :slightly_smiling_face:

The Bulwark (at You Tube) gives their opinion on the ads Platner and Collings just dropped. I’m liking the various Bulwark channels, Tim Miller in particular.
Collins is kinda weak IMO, and Platner is REALLY coming on hard, almost a bit too much for me, as an outsider. (Mainers have been hearing him do this for some time now) Heres readable link. https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/5868003-platner-collins-campaign-ads/

Platner was interviewed by the New York Times. Gifted.

He is asked about the tattoo. Here’s the exchange in full:

I want to come back to something else that happened during your time in the Middle East: You got a tattoo in Croatia when you were serving, and it resembles Nazi insignia. It’s a skull and crossbones. I got a skull and crossbones with a bunch of other Marines in a tattoo parlor in Croatia because skull and crossbones are things that Marines get. I had it for 17 years. I took my shirt off. I was out in public. I took pictures with it. I went through two security clearances where I got screened for gang and hate tattoos and it never once came up on a screening. Until after the campaign started, and then the establishment candidate got in the race, and suddenly they drop all this opposition research, and part of it is that Graham Platner has this tattoo with white-supremacist ties or Nazi ties. At that point I took a look at the thing and I’m like, Well, I don’t want something that has that kind of connotation on my body, so I promptly got it covered up.

Did other people get the same tattoo? Yeah. Other guys in my unit.

You say it’s opposition research, and that may well be true, but ultimately it is hard for voters to know why you got it. That doesn’t seem to be the case for people in Maine. I’ve talked about this ad nauseam.

Have you made outreach to Jewish voters, and how have they responded? Half of my family is Jewish. In fact, the video in which the tattoo is displayed, which was the video that was shared, was at my brother’s wedding to my Jewish sister-in-law with her whole extended Jewish family where I was taking my shirt off and dancing. If I had thought I had something that was this obvious antisemitic thing, I would not have done that, because that would be utterly insane. We have a lot of close supporters who are in the Jewish community in Maine, primarily because I’ve been close with people in the Jewish community in Maine my entire life.

Reasonable point: “…at my brother’s wedding to my Jewish sister-in-law with her whole extended Jewish family where I was taking my shirt off and dancing. If I had thought I had something that was this obvious antisemitic thing, I would not have done that, because that would be utterly insane.”

I don’t know if I follow the logic there. Wouldn’t some white power dude want to show off his tattoo and intimidate people? Especially if it’s the in-laws, whom he may not particularly care for.

That such a flawed candidate (even besides the tattoo, whatever you want to make of it) could get through the primary should be distressing to everyone. It’s a sign that things will continue to deteriorate in America for the foreseeable future, I think. This is clearly not sagacious policy maker.

There are a lot of assumptions in that hypothetical.

I’d think we’d hear more about it from the in-laws, if that were the case.

Yes, if he was standing around shirtless at a party full of Jews and nobody made an issue of it, that says to me that the tattoo wasn’t any kind of obvious Nazi symbol in real life, any more than it is in that photograph.

The video from which the screenshot showing the tattoo was filmed was at his brother’s wedding, and it’s him serenading his new sister-in-law with the song wrecking ball, by Miley Cyrus.

It was him being goofy, and was his expression of love. He called it a wedding present, and was a source of amusement within the family for years.

His sister-in-law, of course, is Jewish.

He was hardly parading around in an intimidating fashion.

At this point, I’m less worried by his tattoo than I am by the time he admitted that he jerks off in port-a-potties.

Yes, I’m sure people have made all kind of gross comments over the years that they’re not proud of, but if I were in his shoes I would’ve nuked my social media history BEFORE I started running for office.

Man, someone is really desperate to find more dirt on Platner.

Well, it’s better than jerking off outside them.

Made me chuckle, this is so true.

Not only that, he looks to be a shameless extrovert, and reliably reported to practice nepotism with his sister-in-law not to mention he has a sister who was once a thespian in wicked New York.

Smathers: “Are you aware that Claude Pepper is known all over Washington as a shameless extrovert? Not only that, but this man is reliably reported to practice nepotism with his sister-in-law, he has a brother who is a known homo sapiens, and he has a sister who was once a thespian in wicked New York. Worst of all, it is an established fact that Mr. Pepper, before his marriage, habitually practiced celibacy.”

I wonder if he’s done even more disgusting things, like pooping, in a port-a-potty.

Disgusting!! He needs to be condemmed!

I mean, seriously, a thorough review of your social media record must be de rigeur for ANY candidate to high office.

Is it even possible to delete your Reddit posts? Platner says he did so at some point, but obviously they’re still out there.

You can’t delete your sdmb posts. :woman_shrugging:

I’m convinced the whole “Reddit post” thing and the reaction to it maps more as a function of age than anything else. We all know that anonymity on the internet isn’t as good as we might like and posting any sort of autobiographical detail under the same user name can be correlated to build up a possible identification. Not that that stops people from posting things at the time. Personally I have yet to see anything that he supposedly posted that I should care about. Not that it makes a difference what I think.

Crap. So much for my Presidential hopes.

You can delete individual posts, in which case there’ll be a space in the thread mentioning that the post was deleted. You can also delete the account, which will preserve the posts but list (account deleted) as the poster.

I’m not sure if there’s a way to delete your account AND all your posts in one fell swoop. If I were gonna run for office, I’d probably hire some people to do that for me.

It’s possible he did do that and the papers are getting his old posts from the wayback machine, but I don’t know how much of Reddit is documented on there.
