# Are there posters you'd like to get to know better...

But aren’t sure how to go about it?
I don’t mean in the “Click on the link in their profile and send them an E-mail”… that’s not quite what I’m getting at.
Most of the people here, I think, have a mental list of people whose posts they read and enjoy, regardless of differing views or whatever- I know I do.
There’s a couple of posters that I’ve thought “You know, I’d like to talk more to this person about (whatever)”, but then I’ve thought “A lot of the people here- especially some of the women- seem to have hordes of people filling their in-boxes with attention seeking E-mails, and there’s a lot of off-board drama that goes on here I’m probably better off not involved in, and I really do need to go out and pay some bills before the post office closes, and get that replacement widget for the car while I’m out…” and I never quite get around to getting in touch, probably out of a strange worry I’ll inadvertently say something horribly offensive and piss people off in that way only I seem to be capable of, especially when it involves people I’m talking to on the net. :smack:
Having a weird sense of humour can be a drawback sometimes… 😉
You know, I just re-read that and it sounded awfully rambling, so we’ll go with the edited version:
Are there other posters here you’d like to get to know better, but never _quite_ get around to getting in touch with, for whatever reason?

One problem (at least for me) with that, is that the board is sort of a “free” space where you can go beyond your normal social limits in asking questions and such. There was one SDMB lady I met at a dopefest who I was tempted to try to get to know better, but if we hit it off, how could I ask some of the off the wall stuff I occasionally wanted to post without worrying about whether it made me look bad or odd.
My real life and my SDMB “life” are blended, but are still quite distinct and it’s probably best they stay that way.

I would love to get drunk with Lieu! All of his posts are hysterical and since I do have the sense of humor of a 12 year old boy… 😛 I think I would laugh and fart all the way home! I believe he lives in Texas so I’m hoping for a San Antonio dopefest real soon!

There are a lot of them, but I won’t name them. One day I’ll get to meet them at a Dopefest, hopefully. I think it’d be cool to meet any group of people from the SDMB, actually, given all the time I spend here. It’d definitely give an interesting additional perspective.

I already feel a little self-conscious just going to trivia night with Seattle Dopers, and wondering how many of my threads they may have read, and how much they know about my sex life. Heh. I know **picunurse** follows my noisy Ballard apartment life, but that’s not so bad. Except that I probably seem just a wee bit batty. I’ve never heard those schoolband seagulls in a truck ever again… Fact is, I’m pretty open on this damned board, so I don’t have a whole lot to hide when I’m around them. That makes things a little easier for me, oddly. Maybe not so oddly. I can be real, I don’t have to test the waters. These guys already know stuff most people don’t figure out for years (if ever), so, hey, what’s to be shy about?

Since I don’t have an IRC client (nor do I have any intention of installing one on the offchance there’s someone from the board in the SD Chatroom when I might pop in- I hear it’s not as populated as it used to be ), but I’ve wondered if there’s an SD chatroom on another platform that’s a bit easier to use?
I’d probably do better getting to know people if I can talk to them in real time instead of via posts on the messageboard…

**Martini Enfield** , IRC is quite easy to use. There’s a Firefox extension called ChatZilla that will do it, and there are lots of other programs for every platform that are very easy to install and use. I don’t know much about Windows programs because the ones I used to use in my IRC heyday (before I even knew about the SDMB or #straightdope) are no longer updated. A lot of people use mIRC, which I guess would be a decent starter program. Kinda lame compared to a lot of 'em, but very easy to set up and use. Probably far easier than anything else we could conjure up, anyway.

There are a few people here I already like despite the fact that I don’t know them.
I’m actually pretty fine with that as it is, though. I feel so awkward talking to one person alone. I don’t like to do the email thing, as I’ll always eventually get awkward and stop responding with no explanation.
It’s not that I don’t like you, I’m just… crazy.
I really only do well in group chats. But there has to be a fair number of people chatting. I don’t want such a large responsibility for the conversation’s success to rest on me!

There are some - mainly the people who always turn up in the same threads where I am.
The _The Amazing Race_ and _Lost_ group.
The people I met at **Gingy** and **WeirdDave’s** DopeTheHalls last Christmas all seemed very nice, and I wish I could have stayed longer.
**Eve** once made a snarky comment once about actually correcting grammar and spelling on hand-lettered signs, and I thought it’d be fun to hang out with her for a day, just traipsing after her as she walks through New York with a Sharpie pen.

When the Mega-Ball ticket comes home to papa, I plan to pack the car and take an MMP World Tour. Maybe two separate ones come to think of it. Start south and east, get some beer and pool time in with **swampy** , and the coastal gang - take **FCM** up on a 3-hour tour, cruise up through PA., NY (hi **mika**!), Ohio - and home.
The western leg is for sure going to take me to Seattle, then who knows from there.
