Russia still has nukes, so the chances of the US arresting or assassinating him are near\[1\] zero. Ukraine won’t be there to push back on whatever deal Russia comes up with, so it is bound to be very favorable for Russia. Ukraine sees the deal as their only out, and accepts it. Russia wins. Ukraine rejects the deal, so continued war is Zelensky’s fault. Putin is being reasonable! Trump is doing his best! Look who the bad guy is that doesn’t want peace. Now Trump is angry at Zelensky, and maybe stops sending arms. Russia wins. Putin and Trump never reach a deal. Trump is mad at Putin and continues to send arms. Trump threatens to add tariffs to countries that buy oil from Russia, like China and India. Just like the tariffs that ~~went into effect on China this week~~ were delayed another 90 days. TACO time, Russia might not win, but isn’t really any worse off than before. Trump, the expert negotiator, gets Russia to withdraw completely from Ukraine, in exchange for prime tee-times for Putin and his ministers. * * * 1. because every member of Trump’s regime is capable of shooting all of us in the ass ---

The only case in which nukes are particularly useful (outside of dealing with a technologically weaker adversary) is to get revenge on someone who has decided to launch missiles against you. MAD. ---

Unless they’ve integrated a cellular launch circuit into his skull, I’m not sure that his desire would factor much into the decision. I’d also note that you can put him in direct line of path of the nuke once you’ve determined which direction it’s heading. If he had some way to secretly signal launch back home, he’d be shifting his likely future from a jail sentence - that he might be able to escape - to self-inflicted vaporization suicide. ---

It depends what orders he gave ahead of time, and how loyal his people are. Or how spiteful - the Russians are nothing if not bloody-minded, and have been known to throw away their lives on general principles. I’d say that if Putin is taken or killed, there’s a 50-50 chance that Russia starts a nuclear war, if only because they’ll think they’ll look weak if they don’t. Do you want to risk it? ---
