Are water softeners really worth it?

my water also comes out of the faucet with a ‘clunk.’

i have had it tested and it’s fine except for two things: a high fluoride content and it’s hard enough to put a hole in a wall if you threw some at one. bathe or wash clothes in that? ewwww.

not only is it is undrinkable without the softener, my appliance guy says it would destroy my water heater, dishwasher, and washing machine in record time. my houseplants seem to do just fine on it, and they’ve never had any other kind of water. as already mentioned, YMMV.

I suspect the entire “hard water” scare has been created by water softener companies. While it’s quite possible to have so many minerals in the water that the lifespan of pipes and appliances are shortened (always due to well water), in general minerals in the water do no harm to us at all.
