> Do you consider the problems brought up by Bernie Sanders and his supporters, or Jill Stein voters to be worth considering? In other words, do you see those groups and the high school walkouts all in the same group of “those who identify problems” (or solutions, even though those solutions aren’t good)? Or do you see a difference between the two groups, where the former are dumb and shouldn’t be taken seriously, so we just smile and pat them on the head, and hope they grow up, while the latter are raising the profile of important issues and so they deserve to be taken seriously?

I consider the problems that all voters, citizens, residents, and even visitors bring up to be worth considering.

It is when solutions are offered that some real critical thinking is needed. You have few solutions that don’t have a cost of some sort. The cost of a solution needs to be balanced against the rewards of its benefits. I do feel that there are quite a number on the fringes of both parties that only consider the benefits part of the equation, and not the costs. The further to the fringe you get, the less about cost, and the more about personal benefit you get. I do think that the costs of some of the things that are being asked for by the Bernie contingent are greater than the benefits that are created.

They ID a problem, come up with a solution, and then demand that that solution is the only solution that they will support. I have no problem with the first two steps there. Same with the high school students. Some want to ban all guns, some want to ban some guns, some want to harden the school, some want better background checks, and so on. It should not be up to them to be responsible for coming up with the final solution that is used, and we certainly should not use all solutions offered. OTOH, if they do have a solution that is actually a good idea, we shouldn’t completely discount it because of where it came from.

This conversation may be difficult, though, as I keep explaining that there is quite a bit of nuance and stuff involved, and then you keep taking one line out of a post and completely misattributing my positions in a simplistic fashion. I do not know why you are choosing to do that.

> Some of them, but I suspect it’s a small minority. I suspect that most of the school walk-outs were probably mostly interested in getting out of class for the day / hour / 17 minutes and took whatever excuse conveniently allowed that to happen.

I was actually at one of the walk outs. The kids were sincere, heartfelt, determined. I can’t speak for every school, but I was proud of them, quite a few of the adults there had to dab their eyes as we watched these kids speak from the heart and honor those that we’ve lost. Everyone was back in class by the end of the period. It was respectful and inspiring. Made me feel optimism that maybe we’ll be alright after all, and it can sometimes be hard to feel that way these days.

That many on your side see them as “mostly interested in getting out of class” tells me that you are severely underestimating them. I think that’s a mistake, but I guess we’ll see where this all goes. I did notice that the NRA now has a negative net approval rating for the first time since 2000 in the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. Might be something to think about for your side.

I think that you are wrong on both counts there. You may be correct about republicans, they probably couldn’t tell you about the most recent school shooting that left 17 dead, and they don’t seem to care what they want even right now.

I don’t know about the rest of the country. Now, to be fair, there is a good chance that they will not be remembered, as there will be more school shootings, until they all just kind of blur together.

It’s not deliberate. Overall your position seems very reasonable and you’ve done a good job of clarifying it for me. Thanks! 🙂

Looking back through my posts to you, most of the one-liners I pulled from longer posts were seeking clarification on just that portion of the post (#58 and #69). I really was just curious how your position on Bernie Bros interacted with your position on the Parkland students.

I for one will remember the NRA’s whore being booed off the stage to cries of “Shame!” for some time. It’s not something you see every day.

Sadly.

Which tipping point? Everything Trump does, or doesn’t do, infuriates Democrats as well as the lame stream news media outlets, and many claim that “this is the tipping point”. I suppose they’ll get it right eventually?

What the Democrats and lame stream news media outlets fail to understand is that their own constant whining about everything Trump has weakened their own credibility. _What did the Democrats claim today? SSDD. Yawn. Has baseball started yet?_

Is your particular/latest boogey man an actual “tipping point”? Probably not. A realistic “tipping point” would be when the DNC selects the next candidate that they’ve determined best represents the people. If the DNC selects another Hillary-type, and I’m not sure that could even be possible, then the incumbent wins.

Perhaps it is. There have been some reports that the NRA has also recently seen a surge in membership.

No, there hasn’t. There’s been a report that “NRA membership” as a Google search has increased massively in the last few weeks, but there’s been no response from the NRA citing a “surge” in membership. There was increased interest shortly after Trump’s “fuck due process” statement, but no hard numbers are available. For reference, NRA membership grew roughly 10% in the 6 MONTHS following Sandy Hook.

I have no idea who Vincent James’s “sources” were, and have no way of independently verifying the claim, which is why I phrased it as “There have been some reports that …” rather than just a flat claim that the NRA has recently seen a surge in membership. Are you saying his source is a Google search trend?

You’d think that he would cite said sources. You know, if they were real and all. So, to be clear, you are citing as a source a right wing blogger who is citing as a source no one.

Well I think we can safely say that if the Dems controlled Congress, he might already be out of office, or at least rendered completely powerless and basically preparing for a series of criminal hearings. He is insulated only because of the idea that he carried the party into power and the possibility that other Republicans could lose their seats by detaching themselves from him. But unlike some of the other posters in this thread, I think that many swaths of the population that put him in power do have a limit to just how much they will accept. Perhaps I’m being naive. I felt like the convergence of the new and disparate misdeeds, that are all consistent with the prior allegations against him, could lead to his allies finally calling it quits. The public statements from McConnell and Ryan saying that they are in favor of the Mueller probe seemed to be a signal. I could be wrong, and that’s why I asked the question.

I don’t know if his sources are “no one” or not. Neither do you (I’m pretty sure). They are “unnamed” though, which detracts somewhat from their credibility. My point here is that I said “There have been some reports …” and **Chisquirrel** said “No, there hasn’t.” He appears to be wrong. Agreed?

“There are some reports” obviously implies that the reports have some basis. I can find a blogger citing no sources to support anything.

I took “an autographed copy of a Trump gay sex tape” as just one of several possible things that would fall ‘within a country mile of a “tipping point.”’ I certainly don’t think it’s the _ONLY_ thing that would, and I doubt **Ashtura** meant it to be interpreted that way either. The parts of that post that I thought were relevant to the discussion at hand were, specifically: “you aren’t within a country mile of a “tipping point.”” and “it will be democrats. IF they get sufficient power to do so (which I don’t think will happen before 2020).” As for the particulars of the fictional autographed tape, I’d rather not speculate. As for whether I’m OK with everything else Trump does: no, not hardly, but I’m not ready to impeach him over what I’ve seen so far.
