Are we inevitably doomed to kill ourselves(as a species)?

They didn’t even get their first confirmation of a planet outside of our own solar system until the early nineties. Since that time, there have been a few thousand discovered.

That would be a great way if such an instrument existed and could detect such things. Most of their instruments are indirect techniques of observation though.

Are we doomed as a species?

If we can’t colonize other areas ( moons, planets, large Asteroids ) , it’s only a matter of time, so on a grand scale, yes we could be.

Doomed as in present tense, not likely, though as the speed of delivery for WMD’s increase, there is cause for worry as it only takes one mad person to start a reaction.

Supersonic missiles leave less time to respond, and the USA now has laser weapons, which for example can destroy a small boat that travels at the speed of light.

“A small boat that travels at the speed of light” is now my preferred method for a supervillain destroying a city. Presumably accelerated to that speed in orbit using an ion engine or solar sail, then dropped on the city when they fail to meet the ransom demand.

Obviously, the laser ( not the boat ) travels at the speed of light. Just youtube navy laser gun, and you can see the test.

And they would have got away with it, too. If it weren’t for those…

It’s very highly unlikely that we’re one of the earliest locations to develop life considering the universe is ~13.8 billion years old, our planet has only been around for the last 4.5 billion of that, and single celled organism didn’t appear until ~3.8 billion years ago. But that does raise the point that in order for us to detect life elsewhere in the universe, we have to intersect with it not only in space but in time as well. And that is the real trick. With certainty there have been species across the universe that came into being, evolved, developed societies, and then died out while the matter/energy that ultimately created us was still churning away in the heart of a star or floating around as unorganized space dust. I would imagine that life, as we think of it, is a flash in the cosmic pan. So 2 of those flashes must coincide temporally, and at least one of them must develop FTL travel.
