It’s definitely not in my inherent nature to plan and delegate, but taking orders and performing specified tasks? My recently-retired boss of the past 7 years would have regarded that as an insulting description of what I do, since my insights frequently redefine a task into something often very different from what was originally specified.
Over the years (not just while in the service), I have always wound up as the leader…I expect more by default sometimes as I jump into taking charge when no one else does. Often the group has made me the pointman.
Mainly I either want to see my views carried to fruition, or want to have other views implemented by the group. Mostly it is about defining goals and organizing resources to achieve the goals. I seek organization in processes, and enjoy managing.
You want me as a battlefield commander, not as an administrative officer. People will follow me into the unknown if they have to enter the unknown, because I have no fear of the unknown. If they don’t have to enter the unknown, they want to follow someone else who doesn’t like going there.
I can be either a general or a soldier, depending on the context. But looking back over my life, I have functioned best as the second in command, i.e. the general’s right-hand man.
I’m in an occupation when I regular have to both take and give orders but I’m much more comfortable in the role of ‘soldier’.
However on several occassions when things have gone Horribly Wrong I’ve had people automatically looking to me for leadership.
On one occassion when things had calmed down I asked someone why they followed me (literally, the building was on fire!) he said, “You looked like you knew what you were doing.”
I have enough self-knowledge to know that I wouldn’t make a good ‘up-front’ leader but I’m rather a behind-the-scenes operations person.
I’m good at making plans but not for spotting the bleeding obvious, for example if asked to storm a building I’d put together a detailed and meticulous plan with timing and movements co-ordinated to split-second perfection only to have some joker walk up and open the unlocked front door when the plan was put into action…
