I thought it meant that you were feigning exaggerated shock. For instance, if you murdered someone and the police came by for a random dead body search, you might say “I am shocked SHOCKED to see this body lying here.” ---

[/QUOTE] Don’t be ridiculous. Rick knows he knows there’s gambling; he lets him win at roulette. (“That is another reason.”) Renault isn’t trying to fool anyone into believing he’s actually shocked. It’s a sarcastic acknowledgement that he’s being forced by the Germans into trumping up a charge, much like “I haven’t quite figured out whether he committed suicide or died trying to escape.” If you want a case where he’s truly putting on airs which then get deflated, how about, “Here in Casablanca I am master of my fate! I am --” “Major Strasser is here.” “You were saying?” “Excuse me.” ---
