The question about 555 numbers reminded me of a question I’ve wondered about sometime. I don’t know whether this works all over Canada and the US, but if I dial 1-700-555-4141 I get a recorded message telling me who my long-distance carrier is. A few times when I’ve changed carriers the information I’ve been given says to call that to confirm that my carrier has been changed.

Looking in [List of NANP area codes](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NANP_area_codes#700) I see that area code 700 is for “Long distance carrier use for presubscribing phone numbers”. First, what does that mean? Second, any other “interesting” area code 700 numbers?

1-700-weather provides weather forecasts, but only works for Vonage subscribers.
