Armchair lawyers and "Freedom of Speech"

And on who you are. If you’re a private citizen, about the only way you can violate another person’s constitutional rights is to enslave them.

That would be painful.

Isn’t the 1st Amendment concerning the Government not quashing free speech? Try to stand on my front steps spewing bile and I’ll show you how far the Amendment protects you.

My local paper can deny to print an op-ed letter, my local tv stations can deny me access to air time, and I can even deny a guy with a bullhorn from shouting things to my home (through noise ordinances).

Say what you want, but don’t expect a right to make people listen

I think the federal government takes another view with regard to “hate crimes” i.e. murder of civil rights workers.

I think those are deemed violations of civil rights defined by statute, not violations of rights enshrined in the constitution.

But not harmful.

I wish I could remember who said it - I always liked this quote:

“You certainly have the right to say anything you wish. However, I am not obligated to provide you with a forum in which to say it.”

I’m pretty sure that was said by Lynn.
