Army shows pic of transsexual B. Manning in make up & wig. Valid legal move or just humiliation?

Now that being gay is not an issue re being allowed to serve where does the army stand on transgendered (ing) individuals?

Army Regulation 40–501, Standards of Medical Fitness:

Bolding mine.

If I didn’t know the pic was of Bradley Manning, I’d have said the person in the pic was hot.

Given that I am a transsexual woman, I normally could not answer this without extreme bias. But you ask about their reliability? Do you think that changing gender is evidence of “wavering” or a weak personality? I’ll tell you this, transsexual people deal with stresses and pressures which would floor most folks. Being torn in two every day dealing with being the wrong gender is an incredible stress, which is why about 40% of transgender persons attempt suicide.
If they were un-transitioned or not transitioning, I might have some concerns, due to those very pressures. But if they have managed to get their life in order, find their center, and arrange their life to actually start transitioning…no, I’m not going to have any problems. With only a few exceptions, every transitioned person I know is very stable, and so long as they haven’t lost their job or family, very happy.

Finally, the law takes some of the indecision out of it. Macy v. Holder may not yet have a huge weight of precedence behind it, but almost every HR attorney I’ve read or spoken to says that it will become the “law of the land,” and private companies can now only fire, hold back, or discriminate against their transgender employees at extreme liability risk. Especially given that the EEOC head has been campaigning recently that transgender protection in the workplace is one of their “number one priorities” for the next five years.

Glad I’m not the only one who thinks so, well maybe not ‘hot’ but its certainly not a bad pic by any means.

I wondered about the motivation for releasing the picture as well, whatever your opinions on Mannings actions you have to feel sympathy for his most intimate secrets being aired for all the world to see and comment on (and yes I’m aware of the irony in that).

The 35 year sentence with possibility of release in around ten years was probably the best outcome he and his defence could hope for, its long enough for the authorities to send a message to other potential whistleblowers but potentially short enough not to be considered excessive. I can see him being released at the first opportunity when all the publicity and interest has died away.

This man is lucky his offence didn’t take place in the US military, I don’t think he’d have got only eight years for it:

btw will Manning receive treatment/help for his apparent GID whilst inside or not?

I Am Chelsea Manning. I Am Female

Federal military prisons do not provide hormone treatment or SRS. They generally do not allow gender-appropriate clothing. They will provide counseling and psychological help, but that will not go very far if Manning is truly transgender. In fact, if Manning is truly transgender and kept from hormones in prison, over time there is a high probability of attempted suicide(s).

You know, the goddamn estradiol is $10/month at Wal-Mart without insurance. Add spironolactone and maybe you get to a total of $50/month. Or about $600 a year. I’ll bet Wikileaks supporters could easily chip in that little.

Thanks, withholding treatment seems to go beyond appropriate punishment and into sheer vindictiveness especially at that price level.
