In a Cafe Society thread, I just made a statement that I almost erased because I thought, after reading it, that it could be construed as an exaggeration. But then it dawned on me that I do believe it. What I said was that Arnold has attained such a status of honor that if he walked up to any first tee anywhere in the US, players should stand aside and let him play through. He has earned that level of respect. Does anyone else agree with this, or am I the only one? ---

Arnold, Jack, Chi Chi, Tiger…there are more than a few who any golfer worth their balls would step aside for. ---

He’s appearing on UK TV now advertising a golfing resort in Spain. I didn’t think he needed the money. ---

I am of the impression that the big 5 golfers mentioned would respect the game enough to not feel a need to play over us amateurs. Having had the opportunity to meet Tiger woods through a Make A Wish foundation wish…he is quite a stand up guy, and I’m of the impression that if these guys are not playing for money, they would see nothing wrong with playing in the crowd…It may be a welcome change. ---

I think Tiger has a ways to go yet to reach that level. For me, it really isn’t so much about skill level as it is about a lifelong demonstration of excellence — not just in the sport itself, but in the treatment of fans and new players. I wouldn’t step aside for Jack either, because I believe him to be spoiled, snarky, and disrespectful toward other players and frankly, toward fans. But that’s just my opinion. Chi-chi. Now, Chi-chi I would beg to join our group. Playing with him would be a real hoot! I’d love to see the sword handling up close and personal! 🙂 ---

I’d stand aside for Tiger because he had to fight prejudice. I wouldn’t stand aside for Arnold (but I might ask for his autograph!). ---

If Tiger showed up at my club, I’d have to call the cops. No, no, no. That won’t do. And, Arnie can wait to play with the ladies, after 11:00 am. 8:00 am on Thursdays. ---

Arnie was the first populist figure in golf, and whereas people look on Tiger with awe because of his abilities (and cash), they embrace Arnold Palmer the “reg’ler” person – even though he’s worth a mint. ---

His tournament is playing right down the street from where I work. He interviewed on a local affiliate last night…sadly, he admits his game has gone to hell, but he still plays golf and will probably play in the Pro Am, although he admits the teenagers could probably beat him now. How sad it must be, not to be able to do well the thing you love anymore. Still, he’s out there swinging the club, so I have to give him kudos. ---

The man at the gate says no, he can’t go in, but there is a public course “a 3 iron shot” down the road. Tiger says: “but I’m Tiger Woods”! The man says, "Oh, I’m terribly sorry. In your case it’s a “7 iron”.
