They do quite well, especially since they have to convert everything into very short sentences that are not ruined by random pauses. The speech will be fairly good, but the delibery will be crap. ---

Would you rather he say bad things about the party? It’s a convention speech. That means the speaker has to say a bunch of meaningless inspiring crap that comes down to “We good. They bad.” That repeats ad nauseum. Then the spokesman for each state stands up and says something like, “The great state of East Fuckota, the cornpone state, home of the world’s largest ball of twine casts its 50,000 votes for the next president of the United States, Oswald Q. Candidate!” Then the nominee gives some speech about how everything is hunky dory (if he’s the incumbent) or how everything has gone to shit (if he’s not), the delegates approve the platform, then they all go out and get smashed. ---

Arnie seems to be no more than the sum of all the parts that he’s played. I wonder if he still has a personality of his own. Is he prone to bouts of self doubt or self reflection? All his dreams (winning Mr Universe, making it in Hollywood, marrying a Kennedy) have come true. Is he a living cautionary tale about what happens when dreams come true? ---

You summed up everything I was shouting at the TV tonight, while fixing dinner, **DtC**. 🙂 I do have to say, that if I were a republican, I would have thought that he did surprisingly well with his speech. However, with viewpoints that differ completely from the ones he voiced, it only raised my blood pressure. The Bush twins certainly were the worst (and most painful… geebus) speakers of the night. Schwarzenneger is no idiot. He’s a politician. An expert self-promoter. Genius, really. When is everybody going to wake up, and realize that being a politician gives one a license to lie. This being an election season, all the gloves are off. Lies, damn lies, and statistics are spewing out of their mouths. Unless they’re under oath, you just can’t trust anything a politician says. Even then, it’s probably a gamble. Just assume that everything they say is possibly false, certainly self-serving, and said with your vote in mind. And yes, that goes for Kerry, too. ---

He was not only allowed to reenlist, but selected jump school as his reenlistment option. He was first in his jump school class, hurling himself out of airplanes with an artificial leg. He subsequently deployed to Iraq with the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. I happen to know there are other stories like this.
