Isn’t at least one of the parents dead (mother?). Apology would be a little late, there. After the clusterfuck circus that was this case, I’m amazed they were still able to make an arrest. ---

Wow. The link says he confessed to things unknown to the public. I wonder if the cops tracked him down, or he confessed on his own. ---

Well let’s wait to hear who they arrested before we get too excited that it’s not a family member. It could well be her father or uncle who they nabbed in Thailand. Or hell, it could be Maurice Clarett. I just hope this finally stops the tabloids from running JonBenet on the covers every few weeks. ---

Just like in any first report, I expect there to be massive errors/miscommunications that will be corrected over the next few days. That said, I am actually interested in the outcome, it will be nice to get a bit of closure on this. ---

CBS says the suspect is a 41 year old American 2nd grade teacher who was already being held in Thailand on “unrelated” sex crime charges. Tabby ---

It certainly sounds promising, and this creep is already under arrest for unrelated sex crimes… but it doesn’t mean that a) he did it or b) the parents are absolved of responsibility. I think it’s going to be a long time until we get the full story. ---

If the guy is guilty I hope he pays the full price. Death by repeated caning of the balls sounds about right. And if the parents aren’t involved at all they do deserve an apology for the way they were treated by the media. On the other hand the way they tried to transform a little kid into a miniature sexy tween is despicable, so I call it a wash. ---

Apologize to the family for _what??_ Nobody kidnapped that poor kid and tarted her up like a cheap whore when she was six years old. Her _family_ did that. And so did a whole bunch of other sicko parents in the kiddie beauty contest game - which should have been the _real_ story all along. If you dress up a whole bunch of prepubescent girls like they’re sex objects, it should shock _nobody_ when one is treated that way, with the predictable followup. Not that this makes the actual murderer any less responsible, but there’s more than enough to go around here. ---

Still too early to draw any conclusions, but I was fairly convinced from the gitgo that the parents weren’t involved. There is just no precedent for a financially and socially successful mother/father team doting on their only child to kill that child. Period. ---

You’re doing exactly to this guy exactly what the press did to the parents. Fuck, you’re doing to this guy what Bush did to the Gautanamo detainees. They’re fair game for criticism on that score. But I don’t see that as any justification for blaming them for the murder. I would also point out that the kind of sexual predators who kidnap and murder little girls do not require provocative attire in order to entice them into preying on children. The suggestion that this crime might not have happened without the pagent stuff seems to me to shift (even if unintentionally) at least some modicum of culpability away from the killer. ---
