I work retail, and we have to check for the strip and check the pictures on all 50’s and 100’s. We don’t use the pen. But I have been in lots of stores that test every twenty with the pen.

A busy mini-mart near me had what musta been a misunderstanding, which lead to the cashier checking and using the pen on every bill used there. I stood in line waiting to pay for my coffee, and the two ones I handed over were checked closely.

The next time I stopped there, they were back to their normal procedure.

Second, how did your brother plan to unload all of that defaced currency? What’s the first thing a store clerk or bank teller does when handed money? Nine times out of ten, they hold it up to the light and look for that strip. No strip = no good.

If the were metal foil strips, just cutting the strip into short segments with a razor blade would probably be sufficient. A number of short cuts across the strip shouldn’t be very noticeable.
