I wonder if you have kids. I know great parents whose kids turned out bad, and crappy parents whose kids turned out great. His two sons seemed to do okay also. He also stayed married to the same woman for something like 60 years, so he had some good qualities.
BTW the Times obituary said that he came out in favor of marijuana decriminalization eventually. But the most interesting thing about it was that as a young man he rode the rails as a hobo, and he said he learned how to hop freights and stay away from the railroad bulls. He also worked as a merchant seaman. I watched House Party as a kid, but he had a far more interesting life than I had ever guessed.
