Artists (and others) - Do people want your services for too cheap?

Given that a mod had already commented on this, I wish you had.

nm, should have previewed.

Ah, this thread reminded me of this very clever video.

The Vendor Client relationship - in real world situations:

I have heard that in some MBA schools they teach that you can get artwork for free by relying on the interest so many have in creating art. So not only do some feel entitled, schools actually teach that they ARE or CAN BE entitled to free art. I feel this is reprehensible, but of a piece with the general behavior of corporate America of late.

I don’t know that I would say they want it too cheap–what the market will bear is what the market will bear, after all–but they often want it cheaper than I’m willing to sell it, yes. That doesn’t bother me. What pisses me off is when they argue with me about it. Look, there’s a certain amount of money that makes it worth my time and energy to make this stuff in the first place, much less haul it all out here and spend my weekend sitting in this tent talking to you, and my prices reflect that. If you feel that amount is more than the item is worth to you, that’s fair enough. But don’t presume you have the right to dictate to me how much my time away from my loved ones and other hobbies should be worth to me.

The ones who really drive me nuts, though, are the people who expect me to work way cheaper than they would be willing to do it. The ones who will ask me to do a 10-hour job for $25, but are horrified and offended when I ask if they’d be willing to do extra work for $2.50 an hour.

That’s exactly the crux of it. With the woman I mentioned in the OP, it’s not so much that $25 for a portrait was not worth her time, but that her coworker got so mad at her for not accepting the commission.

How do you expect Dio to derail this thread properly if you people keep staying on point? Geez…

This is a tautology in a capitalist society. It’s every bit as true, and every bit as useful, as saying that all weight management boils down to calories in versus calories out. Or that if a drug addict wanted to quit they would.

In other words, it’s a stupid oversimplification that shows you care more about showing what a hard-nosed realist you are than participating in the actual discussion. The truth of the statement, in absolute terms, is irrelevant.

Enjoy,
Steven

I’m just stopping in this thread to say that after reading the posts here and 62 pages of Clients from Hell, I have to say that I have achieved an even greater respect for you artists out there, especially graphics/web designers. It seems everyone’s trying to take advantage of you and I can’t believe the crap some of you have to go through just to get paid the agreed amount.

“You want to be paid HOW much? But you do this for fun!”
