Just listened to Robert Plant’s 1988 solo song [Tall Cool One](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ka_ALgG9hqY), which features samples from several Led Zeppelin songs. Reminded me of Mick Jones’ post-Clash band Big Audio Dynamite’s [The Globe](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPrPNpzLHIk), which sampled The Clash’s _Should I Stay or Should I Go?_ Who else has sampled themselves or an act they were previously part of? And, no, despite what people were saying at the time, George Harrison did not sample any Beatles material in _When We Was Fab_. That was just Jeff Lynne indulging his life long Beatles fetish. ---

Not exactly a sample, but John Fogerty was sued by his previous record company for writing a song that they felt sounded too similar to a CCR song. ---

Matthew Fisher (ex- Procul Harum) wrote “Going for a Song,” singing about a song he was tired of playing all the time. It shouldn’t be hard to guess which song he sampled. The Beatles sampled “She Loves You” in “All You Need Is Love.” ---

This was before sampling was a thing (but AFTER the Beatles had made music that used a primitive kind of sampling in “Tomorrow Never Knows”), but there’s the chorus of “She Loves You” in the outro of “All You Need Is Love”. ETA: Damned, ninja’d by **RealityChuck**. ---

Got another one: in the fade-out of “[Helpless Dancer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2W1-69yraU)” on the Who’s “Quadrophenia”, there’s the start of “The Kid’s Are Alright” as played on a radio. ---

Just to be clear here: Sampling was invented around 1980. Sampling is digitally recording something and playing it back. Musical quotes and references are **not** sampling. Replaying a tape is a kind of proto-sampling, but is still not sampling. ---

Kiiara’s _Gold_ samples its own pre-chorus in the chorus itself, which is probably some kind of self-referentiality record
