Artists & their Art--

** Cartooniverse**,

IT doesn’t make much sense to me. I think that when I write music I do it somewhat differently than other musicians I know.

Most other musicians and artists I know talk about ‘just going with the feeling’ when creating something. I generally work the other way around. I think ‘Ok, what kind of mood am I in?’ then I sit and think about the tone I want to use, the style that I want to play and the chords-scales that will get me to where I want to go. Then I start writing. It’s hard to describe but I think I write more from my brain than my gut.

When I improvise I can go back and think through why I made the note choices that I did. When I improvise I am not really thinking about what I am playing but the education-knowledge still comes through.

I just have to brag about this. When I was a Senior in High School I took photography. It was a black and white class. Anyway I took some photos using my Moms Canon AE-1. At the end of the year the school system had a state wide art show. For the show they picked 12 photos out of all the schools in the state. Two of my photos made it into the show. One photo was called ‘It’s a Dogs Life’ which was a picture of a chain link fence and its shadow. I was part of the shadow. The second picture was one of my friends who was kinda short and pretty fat. In the darkroom I tilted the paper and streched the photo out. I called it “Phil does a Diet”.

I loved those pictures but lost them in my apartment fire.

Slee

If I’ve just written something terribly clever I might sit there and think “God damn it I’m funny.”

I paint and although I’m often dissatisfied with my work, at other times I stand back and pat myself on the back. I always enjoy the process (time disappears) and subject matter (I usually paint the female form) and am happy to have a few canvasses hanging around the house.

My opinions on my work definitely change over time. I look at paintings that are 10-15 years old and although a couple have stood the test of time, the style in most looks dated to me.

I recently painted a portrait of a friend’s wife as a surprise for their anniversary. They were absolutely delighted with it (I had many tearful thank yous) and that really is the best feeling I get as an artist - creating something that someone else loves.

I’m a visual artist. I usually work on a peice of artwork untill I’m thoroughly satisfied. Its another thing, the same artwork three days later seems atrocious.

And off yet again to Cafe Society.
