Both missions [carry a spectrometer](https://www.science.org/content/article/international-space-station-has-found-its-scientific-calling) that spies on wavelengths of light absorbed by carbon dioxide molecules, providing an ability to map atmospheric carbon abundance around the planet. The missions enabled investigations into the variations of the natural carbon cycle and also proved capable of detecting human carbon emissions._

That could essentially reverse the funding boost promised in Canada’s 2024 budget, most of which was intended to provide long-overdue salary increases for graduate students and postdocs._

Things aren’t so hot in the U.K. either.

> In the UK, one in five universities is cutting back on research, and the US drugmaker Merck announced last month it was scrapping a £1bn London research centre – one of several pharma companies threatening to move their operations to the US. Adrian Smith, president of the Royal Society, of which I am a fellow, has rightly warned that the UK continues to “lag behind our competitors in the G7 on research and investment”.

Without comprehensive data, I doubt that many scientists have fled the U.S. for greener pastures, as limits in funding, competition abroad and unpleasantness of uprooting and adapting to a new setting, language and xenophobia will be restrictive factors.

The most opportunities will be for relatvely few top-tier researchers already working off long-term hefty grants that don’t prevent migration to other countries.

[_Science_: “Argentina’s move to woo Trump has derailed South America’s largest radio telescope”](https://www.science.org/content/article/argentina-s-move-woo-trump-has-derailed-south-america-s-largest-radio-telescope)

> _Researchers trace CART’s difficulties to efforts by Argentina’s libertarian president, Javier Milei, to forge close ties with U.S. President Donald Trump, whose administration has made curbing China’s global influence a priority. The first signs of trouble came in June, when Argentina’s science agency missed a deadline for renewing a scientific cooperation agreement with China. Then, in September, customs officials in Buenos Aires held up a shipment of key dish parts made in China, which has contributed some $15 million in equipment and engineering to the project. Last month brought another setback when U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent said the Trump administration would provide up to $20 billion to shore up Argentina’s beleaguered economy—but only if Milei’s government suspended strategic ties with China, including [efforts to build “observational facilities.”](https://www.infobae.com/economia/2025/10/14/bessent-aclaro-que-no-le-pidio-a-la-argentina-terminar-el-swap-con-china-pero-apunto-a-bases-militares-y-centros-de-observacion/)_
