The usually jocular Eugene Robinson was seething when, responding to Keith’s request to put the narrative of Todd’s initial claim and the fact that it was a lie into some historical context, he said “The historical context is simple. It is the blood libel against black men concerning the defilement of the flower of caucasian womanhood. It’s been with us for hundreds of years, and apparently it’s still with us.” We’ve been joking about this almost from the beginning because it seemed so obvious to many that Todd’s story simply didn’t add up. However, now that the dust has begun to settle, what’s brought into perspective for black people is that (a) a number higher than zero of Americans are still too willing to tar an entire race of people based on a single accusation, without proof, and (b) had the story not been quickly found to be a hoax, and the rising racial tensions promoted by right wing media, including blogs, diffused, circumstances could easily have escalated into vigilante violence against black people simply for being black. ---

I don’t think she had an intent any more than someone with Tourette’s screaming obscenities – or someone having a seizure and flailing around – has an intent. I think she’s delusional and if racist tendencies underscored her actions, they came from our general culture and not some kind of evil racist gene specific to her kind. And fine – if you don’t want to be compassionate to sick people (and comparing the extremely scattered and inefficient actions of Ms. Todd to Hitler is pretty amusing) and also don’t want to apologize for that, I can’t change you. But since you’re so proud of that, I don’t see why you’re complaining. ---

She may or may not have a history of mental illness, but she also has a big reason to be looking for mitigating factors, and it is only her claim to a history of mental illness, not any sort of corroborated fact. Perhaps she does, perhaps she doesn’t, but you’re running around here making affirmative statements as to her mental health history. Of course I can’t prove the negative (i.e. that she does not have a mental health history), nor do I have any interest in doing so. ---

So let’s be very clear. Because I’m taking the only actual evidence we have to go on, the statements of the press and police, at face value, I’m being a total dipshit. Because you’re choosing to believe some random morons on a message board with no more evidence that she acted intentionally to stir up racism than that she was hired by the McCain campaign – or maybe because you’re so wise you’re having a conversation about a subject you have no interest in forming an opinion about, I’m not sure – you’re the smart one. Well, then why do you believe any part of the articles and police statements at all, if you’re just going to discard the parts you don’t like? ---

She seemed sane enough in her earlier YouTube videos (hey, if remote video diagnosis of people you’ve never met is [good enough for Dr. Bill Frist](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Frist#Schiavo_case), it’s good enough for me). My diagnosis? Sane, but stupid. The most wonderful bit of this whole thing is the Vice-President of Fox News warning that if this is not true, McCain’s campaign is now tarred as “race-baiting” and is toast.
