Asia Carrera, for those who don’t know or like to pretend they don’t, is an adult film star. In addition to being a lovely lady, she’s also a self-professed geek and runs her own website (due to the nude pictures on the site, I won’t post a link). But one fact she has always concealed. She has always refused to reveal her “real” name. She admits she made up the name Asia Carrera and now uses it both on and off screen. Once my curiousity was aroused, I figured it would be an easy matter to find out with a quick online search. But the only thing I found was some claims that her name was originally Jessica Bennett. I found these claims unconvincing because 1) her parents were very traditional immigrants from Japan and Germany and “Jessica Bennett” seems an unlikely name for their daughter to have, and 2) the Jessica Bennett name originated from an early appearance in Penthouse which would lead me to believe it’s a “nom de porn” like Asia Carrrera is. So does anyone have the Straight Dope? ---

Why on earth do you want to know her real name? Just because she’s a porn star doesn’t mean she’s not entitled to a little privacy, and she obviously considers her real name to be private. ---

Why does anyone want to know anything? Curiousity is what seperates us from the apes and kills the cats. And curiousity about celebrities is what sells People magazine. As for Ms Carrera’s privacy, I’m just asking if anyone has access to public information not to go break into her house. ---

It’s public information, but it will probably be for you (as opposed to easily accessible information) to seek it out. Given her tumultuous family history & her profession it’s easy to see why she’d keep it under wraps, of course. I love Asia Carrera. I’ve adored her since I was… 13, 14. She’s always been a role model & inspiration. See, I’m a heterosexual female (excepting a few hot threesomes but that’s more for MPSIMS heh), but I think she’s awesome (especially since I’m an Asian female who tends to dress rather revealingly)… f’rinstance, on my 18th birthday my boyfriend presented me with lotions, clothes and other girly accoutrements… and an autographed, framed picture of Asia. There’s a website out there that has the real names of porn stars, but I’ll be damned if I can remember what it is. I only looked at it once (honest) several years ago. I don’t suppose a Google search for “real names of porn stars” would work? ---

Ironically, Carrere (whose real name is Althea Janairo) made up her last name in homage of Barbara Carrera and also changed one letter. So Asia ended up with the original version after all. As far as I know, Asia Carrera’s first name has always been pronounced Ay-zhuh, like the continent. Maybe you’re thinking of Italian actress Asia Argento, who pronounces her first name Ah-zee-uh. ---

I imagine that part of the reason the OP is curious is the fact that it is hidden. If Ms. Carrera had not mentioned her name at all on her website, I suspect that **Little Nemo** would never have thought to ask. And it’s not even necessarily for reasons of privacy, though we should respect her wishes in case it is. She’s smart enough to realize that a secret name gives her a certain degree of mystique, which leads naturally to publicity (as in this thread, for example). And as everyone in show business knows, there’s no such thing as bad publicity. ---

Huh… according to her website, she’s in MENSA. Who knew? I can say this much… though I’m not a big fan of hers (and I really don’t care about her name one way or the other), I at least appreciate that her site isn’t overloaded with images of her. Sure, there’s photos, but most of them are pretty tasteful, and much more of the site seems to be (_gasp_) _actual content_ where you can can learn about her if you’re so inclined. After looking around for a while, I saw only one nude shot (topless), and a number of partially-clothed ones. I won’t link to it, though this particular page has no photos at all, but her explanation about why she does porn doesn’t amount to “I just love to fuck!”, but seems very honest and real and is actually interesting reading.
