Yea, the young turks called it “The most racist music video in existence” and my eyes rolled so hard I think I sprained something. Some shitty band made a shitty song about how they have a bad case of yellow fever. The outrage is entirely manufactured. Hell, the band probably loves it because they are getting way more attention than they would otherwise. ---

If not for the explicit video (though it could have been more explicit), I don’t think this would raise the ruckus we’re seeing. Using racist language may have ruffled a couple of feathers, but not enough for this kind of reaction. And it’s flat out stupid. There’s a cultural meme being illustrated here, complaining about the people who point it out isn’t going to help anything. If they’re intentions were not satirical it hardly matters, it actually enhances the satirical quality of an unintended result if that were the case. ---

Maybe I’m giving the band too much credit, but I do read it as a send-up of a certain white quasi-fetishization of Asian women. I read it as them making fun of these guys, not celebrating them in a joking manner. You might read it differently. Like I said, it’s not particularly good satire. ---

I think he’s agreeing with you, that it was satire, not just meant to be offensive. I think it’s good satire, my judgement being somewhat biased by the presence of a gorgeous almost totally naked model, but they have lost the message in the controversy. ---

The whole point of any satirical work is that it’s supposed to be based on something that wasn’t satirical. You can’t have irony without sincerity to base it on. If you’re saying that parodies of bad racist songs exist than you’re acknowledging that genuine bad racist songs exist to be parodied. And maybe this video is an example of that. ---
