See what I mean?
I guess you didn’t see Tony Leung in The Lover :dubious:
John Lone is another. You did see the Last Emporer right?
IIRC Keanu Reeves has been portrayed as a hot stud muffin more than once. And The Rock as well. :smack:
But ya, there aren’t a lot of leading Asian hot dudes in American films. Part of it is the language issue. Asian actors from Asia tend to not have fluent enough English.
Not a lot of roles for Asian Men in American cinema – probably not enough to make much of a living. Russell Chang in Taipan is one, David Wu is another (Wu Man show on Channel V and some bit parts like in the Last Emperor.
Dunno if it’s all the rage, but the epicanthric fold and boob job is “popular” in Asia. Probably less than 1% of the population get it done. You see plastic surgeon adverts thorughout Asian cities including here in shanghai. Think I know more guys who have done the epicanthric fold thing than women. Fake pecs (boob jobs for men that don’t want to work out) have also been popular, especially when I used to live in Hong Kong.
That’s what I meant, and I was just teasing.
Did these guys really play romantic leads, though? Or were they pretty much chaste characters, like the examples mentioned earlier? I’m just asking, since I haven’t seen these films.
Neither one is pureblooded Asian though, nor are they easily identifiable as Asian. While one might rightly suspect that they have Asian blood in them, it’s not something that’s immediately obvious. Heck, a bunch of people that I know were surprised to hear that Keanu wasn’t pure Caucasian!
I think that’s a minor consideration, though. It certainly doesn’t stop a lot of Asian women from being cast as romantic leads.
You’re quite clever, in your own way.
(I think the phrase you meant was “In their own right”.)
If they didn’t start singing and dancing in the middle of the fight scenes it’d help!
d&r
But I like the singing and dancing!
I didn’t know Keanu was Asian, either, actually. And I liked the Matrix films.
The Lover verges on softcore porn at places, so no - not very chaste
( and Jane March, also half-Asian and Tony Leung make for two very attractive leads ). Further Tony Leung is in the new Ang Lee film Lust, Caution, which is quickly becoming notorious for its graphic sex scenes as well.
However The Lover was a French film ( L’Amant ) and Ang Lee moves on the edge of Hollywood as well, so I’d call them more arthouse exceptions to the rule.
Makes sense to me, then. Let’s face it; Hollywood doesn’t think that a romantic Asian male lead would be credible to the American public. And frankly, I think that Hollywood is right.
I don’t think there’s any “verges” about it. The movie consists of Jane March getting plowed vigorously and frequently, interspersed with some boring, angsty arthouse drama.
The most glacially-paced, BORING graphic sex scenes ever.
