The serious answer is probably for the same or similar reasons that companies didn’t employ black people at drastically lower wages in the past – a combination of bigotry, inertia, as well as the fact that some companies actually did do this and benefit. ---

I’m sure that has something to do with it, just as the fact that there were few black engineers hired in the 40s was at least partially related to there being fewer qualified black engineers in the 40s. But why were there fewer qualified black engineers in the 40s? Why are there fewer qualified women in various fields today? At least part of these sorts of statistics are best explained by bigotry and bias, both individual and systemic. And even if we look at qualified women, or qualified black engineers in the 40s, the statistics I’ve seen show that they are paid less than their qualified male/white counterparts to varying degrees. Bigotry isn’t the entire explanation for these sorts of phenomena, but it’s part of it, IMO. ---
