> Can you describe some of your typical clients?

It was pretty surprising to me to see that our typical client is a Vietnam vet, over 60, with neuropathy from being exposed to Agent Orange. We do have young guys with chronic pain from being in bar fights, women with MS, and so on, but the Vietnam vets are far and away the most common.

> I work in ophthalmology, and at least one of the physicians I work with has had to counsel a patient to please not rely on (illegal) marijuana usage to attempt to control glaucoma, as glaucoma’s effects are irreversible and usually subtle in progress. (Apparently marijuana is a lot more enjoyable than taking eyedrops; go figure.) He’s said the amount of marijuana you’d have to use to produce a decent medical effect (alone) against glaucoma would pretty much rule out any other activity. Do you know if it’s intended as a complementary therapy in this diagnosis, or is intended to be used alone?

I don’t know- sorry. I’ve never heard the doctors I work with counsel people to stop their Rx eye drops for glaucoma, so I assume it’s to be used with.

> How good is marijuana for chronic pain relief? My personal recollection (now a good quarter century old) is that if something was hurting me before I consumed it, I would start to focus on it, as if it intensified physical sensations of all kinds good and bad. Is it not like this? Or are there particular kinds of pain for which it is good?

There are different kinds that are good for different conditions. I’ve had at least one patient tell me that smoking distracts them from their pain, if not lessens it.

Could someone with advanced diffuse systemic scleroderma be certified? My wife has chronic pain currently treated with morphine and dilaudid. She also has gastroparesis and patulous esophagus, resulting in vomiting, depressed appetite and weight loss. She has many other symtoms as well, but those are the ones that seem fit the profile of the patients that are approved.

New Hampshre has passed a medical marijuana law through one house of the legislature, and I am trying to find out if she might be eligible if the law is adopted and signed.

Yes, chronic pain, anorexia, and nausea are all qualifying conditions.
