Didn’t I see the Bariatric Lap Band open for Aerosmith back in '75?
No, that was the Geriatric Nap Band… I think they’re opening for the Stones now.
Congrats! Read your journal link -
Just as suggestion you might want to consider adjusting the color background scheme a bit. dark blue on purple & a small font is touch difficult on the eyes.
Thanks. I’m a little afraid to try adjusting anything at the moment. I had hellacious problems yesterday with it, and it kept reverting back to an old version of the code. Once I’m sure it’s settled down, I’ll probably do some tweaking. Thanks for the input though
whose journal link did you read?
the only one is this thread is mine
and i also use blue letters on purple background
Ha, I’m a dumbass. Astro obviously meant yours, but his comments could have applied to mine, which I’ve linked elsewhere. I blame it on… astro. Yeah. Astro.
Congratulations Anyrose, I’ve thought about surgery but never had the nerve to do it. Mostly I was afraid that the desire to eat would still be there but I wouldn’t be able to, and the consequences of that. Kind of like a heroin addict locked in a room with no drug.
I’m back on a low calorie diet again; one of many. I lost 130lbs once, years ago; and three years ago I lost 90lbs. Plus, of course, many diets in-between, but never successful in keeping the weight off like the other 99% of obese people who lose weight.
I guess I’ve been lucky up until last year. No health problems related to obesity. But, when I had my last checkup, my blood glucose was 123 (casual fasting) and it scared me to death. Plus, I do have high blood pressure if I don’t strictly adhere to the DASH diet (put DASH in search here: http://www.bangornews.com/news/templates/?a=120816&z=177), which I have been for several years now. DASH keeps BP around 120/75. My blood glucose is still high (avg. 115) fasting, but it’s down some since I’ve lowered the calories to 1100-1200 the last six weeks. The thought of being diabetic keeps me from sleeping at night. I measure my blood glucose myself every morning. So, maybe I’ve finally found something that scares me more than having hunger pangs 16 hours a day.
I wish you luck and know you will be successful in your weight loss. I’ve read so many great stories about people who have had surgery and now have a new life. About the exercise, I’ve been swimming for a hour 3X a week for over three years now, but when I started all I could do was dog paddle a few laps. I couldn’t even raise my arms over my head for the crawl. If you can, go swimming. Screw everybody who looks at you in your bikini! ha. Just keep telling yourself you are doing something good for yourself.
Just wanted to wish you the best in your health improvement plan.
I clicked on your profile, so I just want to wish you a belated happy birthday!
In Nov’96 I was diagnosed with severe osteo & rheumatoid arthritises. From Jan’97 to Oct’98 I had lost over 150 lbs - I went into Manhattan every Saturday to St Luke Roosevelt Hospital for a supervised liquid fast. For the most part I felt pretty good, but the osteo arthritis had already done its damage. Then I had a scary episode which hospitalized me, and found out I have a Lupus-like condition (which aggrevates the rheumatoid arthritis). The meds they put me on started messing with my metabolism and over the next 3 years, I put back 70. Then can a tidal wave of work related stress. I don’t handle stress very well and began eating again, and over 6 months gained back the rest of the weight. That’s when I started researching all the different WLS’s. It’s not for everyone, and if you have the will power (or a scary enough motivation) to stick to a sensible diet (whichever one works for you) I say YAY. Except for that liquid diet 7 years ago, I’ve never stuck to any diet longer than 3 months. But with the Band in place, the weekly loss results will be significant enough and consistant enough to get me past that 3 month mark and beyond
as for exercise, i have a recumbant bike that i use 3 - 4 times a week. I am slowly working up to 20 mins every day. As for swimming, the arthritises make it difficult to wriggle in and out of a bathing suit. I’m not worried about how I look in a suit, because where I swim (when I swim) noone there is smaller than a “sturdy large”
Please I have never been able to wrap my mind around swimming in the winter.
Really? I wonder if it’s a new method… My Mum’s partner has a lap band and he can’t eat things like steak and other hard, chewy stuff because they make him throw up.
Congratulations! I had lap RNY in June, and I’ve lost 70 lbs so far. I actually wanted the lap band when I started researching, but my insurance wouldn’t cover it because it was ‘experimental’. I then opted for the RNY based on it being the nxt least complicated procedure.
My wife had her RNY last month.
Did you have to self-pay, or were you one of the fortunates that had insurance coverage for it?
Color me clueless, but why would a glucose level of 123 scare you? A normal glucose level ranges between 70 and 150, and varies by the hour. Even a normal person can get a spike into the 200s shortly after eating something with a high sugar content.
A level of 123 is excellent…
Anyrose, can you e-mail me? I have an address defined in my profile…
everyone is different - the further away from the actual installation the more varied your menu gets - some people can tolerate foods that others can’t
I don’t have it often but if i make sure my steak is medium - that is competely cooked but still pink and juicy, and i take small bites, chew until liquified, and wait a minute or two before taking another bite, I’m fine
It’s all in the retraining of your eating habits.
If your mom’s friend is trying to eat like he did before the surgery, he’ll have “backflow” everytime.
I have fantastic medical coverage from my employer, including full salary while out on disability
Am I correct in saying that you will have to be careful what you eat for the rest of your life? (What I heard is that you will be eating such a reduced amount that you might not get all your vitamins.)
Further, does it really make you feel satisfied with less? I understand you cannot eat the second cupcake, but do you still want it?
will i have to be careful? hell yes - anyone on any kind of diet would have to be to maintain the loss - the band just makes it easier to do so.
I get my vitamins by eating the right foods, and staying away from refined sugars and ‘white’ carbs - but again, any sensible eating paln does the same thing
Am I satisfied? yes. I eat a lot less than I used to and that makes me happy because I know it will lead to the desired results, which will cause my cravings (which were mostly based on feelings of deprevation) to decerase and eventually go away
And I don’t even want the first cupcake. I don’t eat random sweets anymore. If I am going to have a decedant dessert, I will choose something I really want (or have never had before) and either share it with a friend, or take two bites and take the rest home and make it last a few days, a week, or longer.
