Ask The Guy Who Scares People at a Haunted House Attraction

You obviously haven’t driven around my neighborhood. We have a stunning number of plumbing fixtures that have been repurposed as planters.

10+ years ago I DIY replaced one of the toilets in my then-house. Brought the old fixture out to my garage and just set it there against the back wall of the garage facing towards the big garage door until I could get around to hauling it to the dump, or bulk trash pickup day came around. Which did not happen often.

Being the lazy bastard that I am, that thing ended up sitting there for a year or so. We often left the garage door open, mostly inadvertently. Many neighbors commented on doing a double-take seeing a shitter just sitting there majestically out in the middle of an empty garage.

Also, what does “I shoot Urbex” mean? I’m guessing “shoot” in context is “take photographs of”

As it turns out, a repurposed toilet is a prop in one of this year’s scenes. The actress sits on it, using a brush as her prop (I suppose it’s scarier than it sounds, but I haven’t been through as a customer and plus, what’s wrong with a little levity for a change of pace?).

Yes to photos, UrbEx is short for Urban Exploration (though it includes suburban & rural), basically exploring abandoned places & buildings & taking pics; occasionally with permission but frequently ‘getting’ in. I’m part of the don’t damage anything/leave no trace contingent but frequently buildings will have broken windows, graffiti &/or other vandalism. While I don’t do that or condone it, it does add to the grittiness of the scene.

Here’s a shot from a legit (paid, goes towards rehab) shoot at an abandoned asylum that is supposedly one of the best haunted attractions in the state/country. Notice the graffiti & reflections on the floor (from standing water) on the left, lack of ceiling & broken (interior) windows on the right. I also like that it has that ‘The Shining’ hallway vibe to it.

That’s what I expected it was. Thanks. That’s a great asylum photo. But the clown totally threw me. I can see how wild costuming could add to the horror movie vibe of most of these places. But I didn’t think that was part of the genre.

Unfortunately, some places are just empty shells with only graffiti & peeling paint. The best places were truly just abandoned & not emptied out first. Old desks, chairs, exam tables, wheelchairs, etc. really add to the photo. I know a bunch of people who will bring props, & yes, most of them bring creepy props. It just adds to the abandoned vibe of the photo.

What is the entry fee for Hell Harvest? Any idea how much of the revenue comes from entrance fees versus concessions?

Considering where that brush has been, it sounds plenty scary.

$20, or $25 if you want the Speed Pass. I’d be extremely surprised if the concessions make more than 10 percent of the budget. A few random candies and bags of chips, cans of soda, etc. They also have some branded merch but the only thing that seems to sell is the T-shirts.

Given that a few patrons have thrown punches in the past, is there any worry that some dumb-ass is going to show up with a gun one day, and … well you know.

Any solid precautions in place to prevent this?

I can’t answer for the OP’s location (and assume it varies widely depending on how big/commercial the location) but, when I visited the Haunted Joliet Prison, we had to go through a metal detector and security check.

There are no metal detectors or other security precautions at my place, and this is Missouri - hell, the town of Potosi, about 10 miles down the road, has an active Klan chapter - so the day may very well come when someone turns up with a gun. About the best we can hope for is that someone notices and tells them to put it away.
