My Camino earlier this month was the first I’ve ever lost any weight on (~270 km with ~7.25 kg pack). The previous 5 (including the 500-mile one with the heavy pack) all had tamoxifen and the high-dose melatonin in the mix.

> It’s a strange sensation for sure. But dayum is it a magic wand for weight & diabetic control.

I’ve always believed that different people have different internal sensations of hunger, satiety, etc., and that the largest differences between fat people and thin people are driven by differences in hunger and not in “self control”. And now we have objective proof.

I’ve never (well, rarely) attempted to regulate what i eat, or apply “self control”. I’m not thin, but i don’t gain weight, either. I’m fat because i gained a lot of weight when i was pregnant, and my appetite went whacky, and i was never motivated to lose it. (And I’m a little afraid that if i try, I’ll lose the ability to stay at the same weight without needing to think about it.)

my (unsolicited and unprofessional) advice: see if you can low-key add some fiber into your life (but don’t change anything too radical - as you want to keep doing that for the rest of your life) …

stuff like: 2 guacamole toasts (pick high-fiber bread) … or a spoon of Psyllium powder (the fiber bomb) in water (taste best described as “between wet cardboard and OKish” … that might just do the trick for you …

and importantly do your regular things as always, just add a bit of fiber (in your preferred format) - and you should be better off … pretty sure 8 out of 10 peeps would benefit from a tad more of fiber in their lives …

If that’s directed at me,

1. i take a fiber supplement
2. i do enjoy some foods that are high in fiber
3. even so, i don’t come close to the recommended amount of fiber.

Also, the texture of psyllium in water is horrible beyond description, and i can’t choke it down. I pay a lot extra to buy capsules that i take with a glass of water at breakfast.

I don’t take fiber for my weight, i take it because my father had massive issues with diverticulitis, and i have early stages of diverticulosis.

That being said, the first year of my marriage, my husband made all our bread from scratch, and made whole wheat bread. And at first, i really enjoyed it. But by the end of the year, i well and truly understood why traditionally, people pay more for white flour.

In November 2021, at the age of 50, I had bariatric surgery (gastric byass): I’d been overweight nearly all of my adult life and had been a type 2 diabetic since 2007/2008, and at the time I started the surgery process I weighed 240lbs (at 5’ 3") and my A1C was 10.8. I lost 92 pounds, but became able to eat more than I should…so I did…and gradully my weight started creeping up again: by the end of last year I was at 205, and my A1C was back up to 7.5. I finally asked both the bariatric nurse practitioner and my primary care doc for help, and started taking Mounjaro in the middle of December.

At first there were some No Joke gastrological side effects, but a few months ago I added MiraLax and fiber supplements and these days I’m feeling pretty good (but I definitely notice if I skip them for more than a couple days!). After ten months I’ve lost ~40 pounds, and my most recent lab results were stellar; my A1C is now 5.5.

Because the Mounjaro is primarily for diabetes control, insurance covers most of the cost: it was $50/mo at first, but now I get 90 days at a time for $125. Which isn’t nothing, and the additional GI supplements aren’t cheap, but thankfully I’m in a position to be able to afford everything long term.

At first I put off asking about a GLP-1 because I knew that once I started one I’d need to take it for the rest of my life, and I didn’t like that idea. But as my weight and A1C kept increasing, I realized that I was almost certainly going to need _some_ kind of diabetes medication for the rest of my life: I’d rather it be something preventive that could also help with my weight (i.e., overall health) vs something that simply treated my high blood sugar (like insulin, which I’d started taking pre-surgery).

I’m happy with how I look and feel now. Being 165lbs at 5’ 3" still equals “overweight,” but when clothed I don’t look my weight; and, like others, I think “normal” (135) would make me look ill. At my lowest post-surgery weight of 148, people were starting to comment that I’d lost too much. I’m alright with losing a little more, but eventually I’ll need to start increasing my calorie intake…which will be challenging, given the reduced appetite that others have mentioned. I’ll need to find a balance, though, so that I don’t start gaining weight again but also don’t just keep losing.

I would modify this to say “_some_” fat and thin people, but I do agree that there are more biological/physiological factors involved with obesity than many would have thought!

Thanks for that extremely comprehensive and informative post. 🙂 Thanks especially for the specific a1c numbers.

Just got my lastest labs, absolutely everything is as expected with both my fasting glucose coming at 5.5 (99 for you Americans) and my A1C at 5.5. If I drop 3 lbs more, I would officially be in normal BMI territory. As it is, I haven’t weighed this little since I was in my mid-20s.

If that’s directed at me. …

I’ve eaten a glass of dissolved psyllium fiber powder with my breakfast for a few years in the past. Don’t much mind the taste; make me think of concentrated oatmeal flavor served in a thinner format.

Didn’t seem to to do much plus/minus for digestion or for diabetes. So I eventually ran down my stock and quit buying it. But you raise a good point that it might be worth another canister to try it again in these changed circumstances. Thanks for a good suggestion.

As to bread, etc., if I’m eating orthodox, then my daily allowance of all simple carbs is about 3 bites. No bread is able to be low-carb enough for me to eat any of it.
