I was without electricity and therefore a water well pump for a week during an ice storm. I drank bottled water and plumbed with water from the water garden.

Did it happen while you were in the shower, right before you were going to rinse the shampoo out of your hair, and the water shut off and you said, “I’ll just wait until it gets turned on again” and your wife has held you to that statement for the last 96 hours?

This happens very frequently in China. In the ten years I’ve been here it’s happened maybe five times, each time lasting several days. It seems to be something Chinese people have just come to live with. This time it’s due to some kind of large-scale construction project happening nearby or some stupid shit. It was supposed to be back on last night, was briefly on this morning, and is now off again. I haven’t showered in four days.

Nope, there were notices on the wall telling us to prepare for it, so we all knew it was coming.

It doesn’t. It might make me different than about 98% of the people on this message board, though, most of whom are First Worlders who I assume have running water and have rarely, if ever, been without. I can’t think of a single time in my life when I didn’t have running water before I moved here.
