Depends. Are the straps on your sister’s bra?
It is hoped that a topographical map of the area would help determine which areas where too flood to make drops. Clearly places where flooding wasn’t as severe and where people where congregated in great numbers, like the Convention Center and Superdome, would be primary targets.
I don’t drink alcohol and wouldn’t recommend it in a crisis.
You should start.
Wow, you are original. Nobody thought of using that before.
I’ve got yer raza right here, douchebag. :non-winking Wally:
Saith the Duff Man.
Well, nobody at the SDMB at any rate.
douchebag? “Wow, you are original. Nobody thought of using that before.”
Look, colonoscotomy-bag handler. Handling piss does not make you a pisser. Fuck away.
Does anyone think that Bush wouldn’t have gotten an enormous amount of criticism for doing something as silly as dropping leaflets? I can’t stand Bush, so I almost wish he had.
The sport’s gone out of this… and just so you know, your chip is showing.
Brynda. If that’s all it was, sure.
But if the leaflets gave reassurances, explainations of the mobilized aid effort and why aid is so slow, a timetable of aid arrival and warnings to the looters and shooters followed by the actual aid arrival, then no.
Clearly you don’t, like many people who have criticized my idea, don’t think much of the people of New Orleans if you think that 96 hours without official word and strategy didn’t contribute to the panic and wouldn’t have eased some fears.
What’s not sporting is being led to the Pit to clarify my original statement and then being attacked for defending my opinions and ideas.
If this criticism were constructive, fine. I’d probabrly retract my statements. But I’m not the type of person to let people fire off insults when I can fire 'em back just as fast. If people want to talk, I will talk. If people want to insult me, I can most certainly hang. I don’t slip but I will trip.
Anybody thinks that trip means “falling down” in that sentence needs to brush up on their slang.
Apologies if I misunderstood you. Too many threads on the same topic I guess.
At any rate, I still think you are wrong attributing this to politics with regards to the demographics of the victims. The damage area and number of victims is too large to lump together into one voting block. Even if there was a majority in one party or another, that’d be far more likely due to chance than intention. It’s also much simply to attribute it to incompetence because those in charge from local to state to federal are of different parties. Even if Bush doesn’t care about poor black democrats, the democrat governor should and should’ve made sure they were evacuated.
To put it simply, attributing this to party politics does nothing to show and fix the real problems.
The pit is not the place for polite discussion. But you know that.
Never the less, plenty of people disagreed with you on valid grounds of efficacy and logistics of your proposal. You don’t want to hear it? Fine. But don’t pretend like you’ve been lured and ambushed. It’s dishonest.
The survivors could have made rafts out of the ensuing papier mache and floated to safety.
(Yeah, I have issues with the timeframe of aid arriving, but I don’t think that the airdrop suggestion holds much water.)
I also know that this discussion was began relatively polite for almost two days before I was called an “unthinking reactionary asshole.”

The first words of this thread are, “This is a Pitting in name only.” I expected some hostility but not the level of invective heaped at me by Weirddave – who, incidentally is bringing COMPLETELY OTHER SHIT he’s pissed about into this discussion, shit I suspect happened as far back as LAST YEAR. I don’t mind disagreement but people should watch their tone.
-
People are not validly disagreeing with me. They are mocking the idea outright. When I ask them specifically what they have a problem with, I do my best to address it. Again: I fail to see why this is a bad idea. Looting for survival is borne out of a fear of dying: tantamount to any rescue effort in such a panic is the need to reassure people. Nagin did not do so and Blanco did not do so. Yet Bush did so in Florida immediately after Charlie last year and after 9/11/01. He did not do so in New Orleans.
-
I feel like I was lured and ambushed. Which was naive. It’s not dishonest.
I would honestly like to hear from you why. Do you think the effort would fail? Take longer than the 24 hour period I projected? Somehow worsen the environmental damage? Makes Bush lok inattentive and ineffective? Do you think people would be too angry to read the leaflets? Not believe it? Not understood? Be endangered retrieving them? Be angered rather than mollified? Riot more? What?
Keep in mind , boy. I never claimed that as my sole province around here.
Who’s your daddy, bitch? Fuck, it’s too easy picking on you. I’d have more a challenge in kicking a sick bunny than pointing oit your deficiencies. Fuck off, punk.
Yes, us adults are well aware of the current vernacular. (Look it up, kid) Take your skateboard and go back to the fucking mall.
I think, from the pictures and reportage we’ve been seeing, that the place was already a disaster area and dumping a shit-tonne more paper refuse in would not be helpful, and that “dry” was a relative term even in the parts not under several feet of water. I think it would be a waste of time and money and an insult to the people who needed food, shelter and transportation. I do indeed think that people would be angry to receive paper when their children were starving and sickening. I also think it’s just plain daft.
Look, duffer it was moderately amusing to trade insults with you awhile ago, but things have changed. I’m older now, we’ve grown apart, I have a family and a career and I just can’t be content like you – sitting my my trailer-park on a dial-up connection with a free AOL disk drinking marked down Appalachian beer and eating mayonnaise sandwiches. Go play with Weirddave, he’s more your type, he’s got webbed toes from his parents fucking even though their siblings too – just like you. That’s it, son. Run over there on your stumps.
How do I say this gently? You’re just not… evolved.
Taa.
Seriously. Honestly. That is the weakest, lamest, most juvenile insult I’ve ever suffered here. Suffered. Heh. You’re cute little one. Most married, upstanding carreer professionals in mansions don’t talk about raza and trippin’. And if they do they sure as shit don’t try to explain it to us dullards.
So full of shit your eyes are brown, aren’t they? Fucking weak. Go back to having your ass handed to you by everyone else.
Okay. I’m pretty sure 500,000 sheets of paper on that disaster area would not have aggravated any toxic effects from the flooding. I don’t think any meaningful communication to let flooding victims know that help was on the way is a waste of time or money, particularly when in THIS day and age, it doesn’t take long or is that expensive to print half-a-million sheets of anything. They aren’t receiving paper, their receiving a message of reassurance and a promise of help from their PRESIDENT. That’s like saying, I want to give them FEMA-issued credit cards worth up to $2,000." “People are starving and sickening, they don’t want bits of plastic.” No… they want the promise of what help that card represents.
So: in essence you don’t think encouragement and a promise of help would be meaningful to people in desperate striats? Yeah, sounds about like Bush to me.
Well, just so long as we agree YOU didn’t even come close.
Taa.
Man I hate waiting for the 60 second time delay…
