Lips, do see a doctor, please. My limited understanding is that the opiates - codeine and the like - are not particularly damaging to the body at all when taken at normal doses for pain relief. You may well be better off taking Tylenol with Codeine or something than taking high doses of OTC pills. Obviously I’m not a doctor, but your doctor should evaluate it; they may decide that something else more effective would be less likely to damage your internal organs over the long run.
IF you take a dose that high, I suggest you do so over a half-hour at least, with something to eat while doing so. IANArealD.
Wasn’t there some new health warning on naproxen?
I do recommend naproxen as best for long term back/joint pain. But- as **Qadgop the Mercotan ** mentioned- it is best for that use if you take it for weeks & weeks (or longer). I have been taking 4 naproxen a day (2 at day, 2 at night) for joint pain for years now, under Dr’s supervision.
You can usually mix acetaminophen with NSAIDs. However, when mixing NSAIDs consider the cumulative dose. In other words, 2 Tylenol & 3 Aspirin are generally OK, while 3 aspirin and 2 naproxen are not nessesarily so. Consider all NSAID’s as equivilant and you won’t be too far off (although naproxen is a bit higher dose per pill).
Lips- even though IANArealD, I strongly suggest not taking acetaminophen over long periods. The NSAIDS are much safer for that- unless you have an ulcer or something. YMMV.
With all of this talk about my beloved Advil, I gotta know…
Whenever I go on a long run (>10mi), I usually pop three of the Advil caplets in the evening so my leg soreness doesn’t wake me up. In fact since I went on such a run after work today, I just ingested 600mg prior to opening this thread.
I typically do this three days per week.
The idea of making this pain medication part of my normal day-to-day activities is slightly unsettling.
Am I slowly building up a tolerence? Filling my liver with glop? Six months away from mainlining the stuff?
Is there a better alternative?
Now I’m curious too. I’ve had a gastric bypass. I was told never to take aspirin, ibuprofin, or naproxyn presumably mainly because of the gastric bleeding issue. I was informed that I can take Tylenol. But Tylenol simply doesn’t work on me. So what do I do when I get cramps? Just cry a lot?
I really do NOT want to take anything that could cause gastric irritation…just too risky for me. Is there something I can take that both works AND is safe for an altered digestive system?
L
minor7flat5- for most dudes, the problem with Advil/ibuprofen is stomach problems. Nothing with liver etc. In other words, if it isn’t bothering your stomach, you’re likely OK. IANArealD, YMMV. But in your case i’d switch to naproxen on a daily but lower dose- maybe two pills per day- once in the morn, once at night? Maybe throw in an ibuprofen when your really need it.
ChoosyChipsAndCeilingWhacks- not OTC. See your Doc.
