where I come from, supporting OSU is considered a handicap in and of itself. of course, I come from a mixed UofM/MSU family(not to mention going to UM myself).

As for the title game, I hope you win, I really do. It’s good for the Big Ten. That said, you guys are gonna get your asses handed to you by miami.

So let me see if I’ve got this straight:

1. You apparently think that **No One** should be held responsible/should be punished for the riots caused by OSU students in Columbus Saturday night/Sunday morning.

What an enlightening and charming worldview you have.

1. You base the number of OSU students involved in the rioting only on the percentage that were arrested.

Like that number means ANYTHING.

Like the individual rioters are actually going to announce that they are OSU students.

Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if they did, given the low IQ of the average OSU student.

I’d advise you to quit while you’re behind, less you want to be taken out behind the woodshed **yet** again.

Jesus fuck, moron. You arrest and prosecute the fucking rioters–students or otherwise–which the goddamn article you apparently didn’t read says is happening. You don’t punish the goddamn football team that had fuckall to do with this, except for happening to win a football game. See, when X group of people break a law, you punish X group of people…the ones who actually broke the law. What is so fucking difficult to comprehend about this? Were you dropped as a child?

And frankly, arrest records are about the closest you’re going to get to an estimation of how many rioters were students. Or are you going to personally interview every fucking rioter? Do you have a single _shred_ of evidence other than your own worthless assertion that most of the people actually doing the rioting were students? Do you understand the concept of a fucking _news_ organization, with reporters who are paid to do things like, say, find out how many of the people arrested were students? Hell, I don’t trust mass media for shit, but their word is a fucking lot better than yours.

Although with you as an OSU student-representative here, I’d say if the asshat fits…

As a fan of U of M football since I was a wee child, I can only say that emotions run incredibly deep for this particular game. That is, of course, no excuse for the behavior of a few idiotic fans.

But please keep in mind that the majority of football fans at OSU were mean and nasty to us in a FUN way - just like we are when they come to The Big House. It’s a wonderful rivalry, full of history, upsets, personalities and emotion. So don’t crap on the whole school.

Leave that to us Meeechigan fans…

Oh, and by the way, as much as it pains me to say this (and yes, I was screaming at the tv all day yesterday, and my girlfriend thinks I’m crazy)…OSU played a damn fine game. They deserved to win. And I hate Navarre.

The argument isn’t whether the students at OSU are assholes. The issue is whether they’re overturning cars and “rioting.” Also, **WSler** seems to think that the football team should pay for the actions of the rioters – the vast majority (where have I seen THAT phrase before?) of whom _aren’t even students!_

As far as being assholes… well, I won’t speak for the rest of the Buckeyes, but I’m a Grade A dick. I just don’t think it should cost my football team a Fiesta Bowl berth.

Hey, great job on eschewing “asshat” for some new words! Just a bit of advice, though. I’d drop the “quim” bit. Yeah, I know, you must be terribly proud of yourself to have found a naughty word that starts with a q. The thing is, though, is that the last time “quim” was used was in a bad 70s porn. Get with the times, man.

And I’m very sure that you have a deep knowledge of _The Lantern_. Could you even think for a second that maybe, just _maybe_, a paper run by generally responsible students might be critical of idiots?

Even if you refuse to accept that, the fact is, the numbers don’t lie – 4 out of 48 who have been arrested are students.

Show me where I said that. Go on, scroll up, the thread ain’t that long. Aw fuck it, I’ll save you the time, the headache, the staring confusedly at the screen. It’s not there. Call it a revolutionary concept, but maybe punish the guilty, i.e., NOT the football team, but those who are burning cars?
\*\*

> [@](#):
>
> Like the individual rioters are actually going to announce that they are OSU students.\*\*

They don’t have to announce it. See, once you get arrested, the cops get to ask your name (what a hideous civil rights violation). And then, through the wonders of modern technology, a list exists of actual students at OSU (I know, how bizarre!). If your name is on that list, guess what… you’re a student!

Should I explain that more slowly?
\*\*

> [@](#):

> You base the number of OSU students involved in the rioting only on the percentage that were arrested. Like that number means ANYTHING.\*\*

I tell ya what. You tell me what you’re basing your “vast majority” statement on, and we’ll go from there. In the meantime, tomorrow, I’ll post a quote from The Lantern (despite the tremendous bias! ) which will probably be from Earl Smith, the Columbus Police Department’s OSU liason guy. And it’ll read something like, “Sadly, most of the rioters were not students, but rather rowdy people with nothing better to do on a Saturday night. It’s regrettable and unfair that the university gets a black eye for the actions of these guys.”

You know how I know that he’ll say something like this? Because I’ve discovered a way of talking that you might not know about. Rather than speaking out of my ass about something I know fuckall about, I’ve actually read about past riots! Many times! And just about each and every time, Officer Smith has said something like this.
\*\*

> [@](#):

If I’m quitting, it’s because I’ve realized the futility of trying to use logic and evidence with a true paragon of ignorance such as yourself. Don’t get me wrong, I commend you for your constant pursuit of Tom Green-esque commentary. But honestly, I’m going to get tired of picking on you eventually.

Well, going on what I know (which is not much, but is much more than what **WSLer** has made up), he’s wrong. But hey, maybe the cops selectively arrested those they somehow innately KNEW were not students. And maybe the cops have done it for every past riot, prompting Earl Smith to make statements similar to the one I paraphrased above. Then again, maybe they’ll watch the videotapes and will arrest a buttload of students. _shrug_ It could happen. But until it does, **WSLer** still doesn’t know what the fuck he’s talking about.
\*\*

So yeah, his OP didn’t say students, but he equates rioters with students. Which is dumb and wrong, to put it succinctly.

Police in riot gear and the liberal use of batons under the goalposts would be a good idea in my modest opinion. I’d stick around after the game just to see it emloyed, win or lose. Ditto for the street “enthusiasts.” There’s a lot of difference between jumping up and down and screaming like an idiot for a couple of hours and rioting, as well as an appreciable difference between an admonition and a physical deterrent. Let the punishment fit the crime and vice versa. Also, perhaps the administrators involved with these events might like to take some responsibility.
Have they no policies? Are they not communicating them?

So. . . it’s okay to tear down goal posts and storm football fields, but ONLY that. Gotcha.

::makes a mental note::

I mean, as long as it doesn’t leave the stadium, right?

Certainly there were students involved in the rioting and overturning cars and setting things on fire. Are there more students that DID NOT participate in rioting? Yes. Do those involved deserve to be punished? Absolutely.

So I have to ask. . . are you pissed at the students at Washington State who threw things at visiting University of Washington fans? Are you pissed at the Clemson students who rushed the field, causing injuries? I should clarify–I don’t believe MSU got less money, either, than they would have. But in the usual round of appropriations testimony, and other events where MSU had a chance to show off, they had to spend precious time making the right noises about security and such. There is an opportunity cost there–you can lose some goodwill.

In the case of MSU, the riots subtly suggested that the university and its students are less refined than the universities it aspires to call its peers. And the same could be true of OSU. There are probably programs and measures on which OSU looks better than, say, Duke. But there will always be people who will think “yeah, but Duke students have the self-control not to riot.” Even if that argument is irrelevant (and unfair, since it doesn’t look like many rioters were students), it’s a crappy thing to have going on. And who knows how much it subtly effects foundations, prospective employers, parents of prospective students, and so on. You can’t measure that stuff, but it’s there. And it sucks. One of these days some U-M morons are going to riot over some stupid thing, and I’ll be pissed, for the same reasons.

Quix, you toss us a news story to support your claim, but then claim the people quoted in it are full of shit. How convenient.

But the fact remains: no one knows how many of the rioters were students. Not you, not WSLer, not me, not anyone. But I was a college student once, I know how it feels to celebrate after a championship, and I know college students can quite often be assholes-- especially when they do what they do best: consume massive amounts of alcohol.

I honestly hope it wasn’t the students, because in addition to now having criminal records, it’ll fuck up their academic careers.

School administrators? What, policies like: don’t burn matresses in the street? Don’t use rioting as an expression of happiness? The university forbids you from destroying public or private property in a drunken melee? There needs to be university policies stating this?

After some thought on this matter doing laundry tonight, I figure the Dukes and Miamis of the NCAA, being private, expensive schools, do not have the Joe Sixpack fan base that state schools do, being as they tend to draw their student body from further away (in my experience), and have that uppity elitist snobby attitude that distances them from the populace. Miami has won a National Championship or two, and is currently undefeated and headed toward a matchup with OSU (great defense at the end, by the way!) for another shot at the title, but to my knowledge Miami fans don’t pull this crap. Ditto for Duke’s three title years (basketball). Villanova’s 1985 NCAA Championship brought riots and car burnings, so this is not a sweeping generalization, but it may point to some reasons why it happens some places and not others.

As for a punishment to prevent this disturbing trend’s continued growth, it say it HAS to impact the team in order for the mob to be self-regulating. If 100 people get arrested this year, they’ll probably not do it again next year. Another 100 assholes will. Or maybe 150 next year. If unruly mob behavior of the fans (NOTE: Fans, not necessarily student) results in problems meeting a certain level, I believe it needs to hurt the team’s post-season hopes for the next year, or have some similar impact. Speaking of Duke, Coach Krzyzewski has gotten on the PA at Cameron Indoor Stadium and told the crowd he would forfeit the game if their poor behavior continued. You’d better believe they calmed down. They believed him.

I’ll tell ya what you do in that situation. Stand the heck back, and let the fans take the goalposts. The more violently the police respond to that situation, the more likely the level of violence by the fans is to escalate. The police should simply get people out of the mob’s way, the mob can take care of itself. I’ve helped tear down goalposts, when you take that field you assume the risk. Just let the cops make sure no bystanders get hurt.

I’m sorry, but this thread isn’t complete until **Krispy Original** shows up, and says one of the following things:[ul][li]“Our football fans are rioting because of a secret conspiracy. English soccer hooligans have infiltrated our society, and have mind-control over our football fans now. Therefore, the latter group suddenly behave like pansy-ass soccer loving hooligan Eurotrash.”[_]“Our football rioters are tougher than soccer rioters.”[_]“Well they may be rioting, but at least they’re fighting over a worthwhile game, unlike soccer fans.”[/ul]Seriously, it just isn’t the same without it.[/li]
Of course, the real answer is that riots about sports take place in any place where assholes reside. In other words: anywhere in the world, potentially. What _does_ scare me, though, is that these rioters were college students. This is gonna sound a tad elitist, but I feel mildly more comfortable with the fact that the average European soccer hooligan is a complete fucking lowlife without a job, but usually with a criminal record and an alcohol problem. Keeps the world a little more transparent, you know?
