The issue of having some while visiting a state where it’s legal is that it’ll probably still be detectable in your system when you go back home.

For the record, I gave it up sometime during the Reagan administration. I suppose there might be some circumstances where I’d get high again but I can’t think of any. I think I’m immune to peer pressure on substances now; I’m pretty good at turning down offered drinks.

Can an employer legally discriminate against you for testing positive for pot, if you smoked the pot legally?

I am amused how this poll presumes that no one here has tried it yet. How cute. 😃

As for me, my state is (slowly) going through the process of legalizing medical marijuana. (The bill passed, but then they spent several months coming up with rules to regulate the dispensaries, the MM ID process, etc.) I’d be interested in finding out if pot could have a beneficial affect on my depression and insomnia. Currently depression is on the “maybe” list for conditions that qualify for MM, and it may take a while for them to decide it’s really okay. Also, the fee to obtain the medical ID is INSANE, and apparently it’s still cheaper getting pot from the street than from the medical facility.

In short, yes I would, although legality is holding me back less than a general lack of access. Walking down to the corner dispensary (yes, I actually have one) would be a hell of a lot easier than figuring out how to find myself a drug dealer.

I won’t be lured by so called ‘legal’ pushers to try marijuana, which has been shown to lead to hit and run accidents, questionable friendliness, manslaughter, bad hair, suicide, eating chocolate cookies, hallucinations, watching golf, and descent into madness due to marijuana addiction.

I’ve never had any interest in trying it. I’ve never had interest in recreational drugs in general, including the legal ones like alcohol. I also find the thought of smoking _anything_ repulsive, after growing up surrounded by smokers. If I ever did try some it would definitely be in edible form, not smoked.

I mostly lean towards no now, but if I get in a better place mentally, and I could do it very gradually, I could maybe see myself trying it just to see if a little might feel good.

But I’d be otherwise too worried that I’d have a panic attack.

In the US, at least, it’s _not_ legal federally. But more generally, “pot smokers” isn’t a protected class. They can fire you for using alcohol, if they want, or for collecting beanie babies, unless a particular jurisdiction has decided they can’t.

I’ve living in Colorado during the entire legalization process. I haven’t enjoyed legal weed yet. I stopped smoking in college when I barely passed a drug test and almost lost an internship. All of the jobs that I’ve had since graduating have been subject to both pre-job and random screenings. My urge to enjoy legal weed is much lower then my worry about losing or not getting a job due to failing a test.

For the record Colorado recently ruled that employers can still fire people for legal drug use.

I now have a job that doesn’t screen and maybe in a year once I’m feeling secure then I’ll head down to a dispensery and give it a run.

Sure, an employer can ding you for drinking on company time. Perfectly legal, perfectly understandable in many jobs. But employers can’t generally ding you just for drinking on your off hours, say, in the privacy of your home. And since THC stays in your system long after its effects are gone, it sounds like that’s exactly what would be happening.

Legal or not, pot was omnipresent in my high school days. I had countless opportunities to smoke it. I didn’t.

Why would I start now?

Well this is a gray area that all the states with legal weed are trying to come to terms with. It’s been discussed a lot here in Oregon. Recently a newscaster was fired when she was involved in a minor fender-bender and tested positive for metabolites. She wasn’t high, but admitted to having smoked the previous weekend. The employer has a no drugs policy, so she got the axe. She was probably drinking the previous weekend, too, but there is still a significant double standard when it comes to pot, even though it’s legal. The problem is exacerbated by the fact of it being illegal at the federal level, and that marijuana metabolites stay in your system for weeks after using it.
As for me, I went into a pot store the day it became legal here just so I could see what it was like to visit a pot store and look at and talk about weed without the slightest worry about getting busted. I didn’t buy any, though, since the “dealer” I’ve bought from for years is a grower/wholesaler. Cut out the middleman.

I voted no way. But as a teenager during the sixties I smoked a little weed and I did not have a problem, But I would not touch it these days as some has been genetically modified to make it stronger and also addictive and can cause mental illness.

I have never consumed alcohol or smoked tobacco (when asked, I generally say that I tried using the patches to work myself up to smoking, but it just didn’t work out.)

I have been asked to prepare many things for various people, esp in decades past. The only thing that I was ever tempted to sample was a batch of chocolate chip cookies made with pot.

It took a while for anything to happen, but, when it did, it was not at all what I expected. Essentially, I felt two things: really, really tired and this weird disconnection between my mind and my body. I had difficulty speaking & was almost completely unable to perform complex tasks. But, it wasn’t the pleasant, warm, fuzzy, happy feeling that I’ve heard described.

If that’s what people enjoy and describe as being “high”, I’ll pass. Reminds me of a [joke](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=15820263&postcount=76) I read earlier. You can have a good time getting dizzy or smoking pot or collecting beanie babies. I would never take that away. But, it’s not for me.

I might buy some - just to buy some. I love the aesthetic of head shops and music festivals and Renaissance festivals and places like Burning Man. I hope these people have long, productive lives. I haven’t yet met a juggler with whom I did not get along. But, as visually pleasing as I find it all, I don’t actually “believe” in any of it.

I’d try it if not for the piss test at work.

If any of you try it for the first time, don’t be like the guy who smoked half a joint, and then wondered why the room was spinning. IMHO, the best thing, if smoking for the first time, is to put one hits worth into the bowl, hold it in, and exhale through your nose slowly. Then wait about 10 minutes or so between hits. You’ll reach a point where you don’t need anymore.

The crap we got 40 years was just that… crap. You had to smoke it 2 or 3 times before you’d get your first high.

I smoked more than my share of pot and hashish in my day. I stopped about 15 years ago. I’m not tempted by it or attracted to it. But I don’t think wrongly of people who do use marijuana. It should be legal everywhere.
