She had never recorded anything before - they only asked her to sing because nobody else in the studio knew English. Amazing. ---

Oh, man. If ever a person could be in love with someone solely because of her voice, that was me the first time I heard the Getz/Gilberto album. The perfect blend of her intonation and Getz’s horn was totally seductive. That she took up with that gormless wienie didn’t lessen her appeal at all. Her first husband, Joao Gilberto, was no slacker in the vocals, either. ---

The [Veloso Bar](https://321shortlink.com/external/1591) is still there at Ipanema beach. I stopped by while in Rio but Astrid wasn’t there that day. According to [Wikipedia The Girl from Ipanema](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Girl_from_Ipanema#:~:text=It%20was%20written%20in%201962,written%20later%20by%20Norman%20Gimbel.&text=The%20first%20commercial%20recording%20was,Gilberto%20became%20an%20international%20hit.) is believed to be the second most recorded pop song in history, after “[Yesterday](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yesterday_(Beatles_song))” by [The Beatles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles). Her singing always serviced the song. I can just imagine an All Star tribute concert, with more recent stars doing her songs with all their vocal gymnastics- it would be awful. ---

The actual Girl from Ipanema, [Helô Pinheiro](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helo%C3%ADsa_Pinheiro), is still alive. A salute to the songwriters [Antônio Carlos Jobim](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ant%C3%B4nio_Carlos_Jobim) and [Vinicius de Moraes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinicius_de_Moraes), too. You have to wonder what the reaction would be today if they wrote such an ode to a 17-year-old. Would it become iconic? Would lyricist Moraes, over 50 at the time, be canceled? So much has changed. ---

Oh… sad to hear that… I love Brazilian samba/bossa nova music. I have all of Jobim’s albums (back when they were LPs). My favourite solo on that album is on _O Grande Amor_. The way he ends it by repeating the same notes, but gradually moving from crying anguish to quiet resignation is amazing. As for Astrud, I wouldn’t say that she was a strong singer technically, but her soft, understated, slightly hesitant approach is exactly what bossa nova needs. ---
