Atheists: Ever wish that God existed?

It’s a damn good thing Allah and Yahweh aren’t real. But the OP says “benevolent omnipresent type figure,” which might be a nice change.

I have to say… I am a free-minded Christian, but the "hell’ part seems to just kill everything. Why must someone burn forever when they die? That scares me

I do, very often. I even sometimes sort of believe because it brings me comfort, but only for a short while.
I grew up with a concept of a loving god who didn’t send anyone to burn in hell. My god was always there, listening to our prayers and deciding like only a good and loving god can who he should help with a formula that to humans was ‘a mystery’. I didn’t understand why a sweet kid like the one at our school could die of an asthma attack, but I was comforted by the notion that God had a reason, and that she was there with him after she died.

Now I see how ridiculous it sounds, but I still find myself praying and wishing for that god to help me find the peace of those days.

I wish their was an capricious, uncaring, god that we could some day rise up against and cast down from his (or her) throne.
