Is it OK to use the figurative meaning of foxhole? I know I have heard it used such a way in church services.
I thought the exact reason he was nailed to the cross was that he (a) had been put on trial for blasphemy, (b) got found guilty, and (c) was sentenced to execution, just like plenty of other folks back then who went through the same three-step process.
With hope of cutting off this hijack, b is contrary to John 19:6, which shows Jesus was found not guilty. Yes there is more to this but at the request of the Mod start a new thread and we can talk about it.

John 19:6 leads into John 19:7 – _"Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, ‘Crucify Him, crucify Him!’ Pilate said to them, ‘You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.’ The Jews answered him, ‘We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God.’_ And, in hopes of bringing this back on-topic, this meant that Jesus soon found himself in a figurative foxhole and promptly asked why God had forsaken him.

> I’ve never really understood what the people saying this was meant to convey. I think it’s true to an extent - faced with imminent danger makes you desperate enough to do anything to relieve the pressure - but when religious people say this, are they bragging? Are they trying to say “when the time comes, you’ll see that I was right?”
>
> Because to me it sounds like “when you are scared out of your fucking mind, completely desperate and irrational, you will finally crack and fall into the same beliefs as me - beliefs I chose to hold under no such durress”, which isn’t exactly a bragging point.

This, basically.

People are irrational, we all are. Haven’t you ever cursed at a malfunctioning machine? Intellectually we know it’s pointless, but it lets out steam. If I’m in great danger and say “God, get me out of this,” it not only doesn’t prove anything about the actual existence of a God, it doesn’t even prove anything about my own real beliefs.
