Atlatl and dart vs bow and arrow

The atlatl was, according to most, the first actual weapon system, more primitive than the bow and arrow. But then, look at the size of the hunted animals when the atlatl was developed. They were large, and penetration with the atlatl was much deeper (than early bows… I’m not referring to longbows and modern compounds). As the game got smaller, and more forest animals were taken, the smaller, faster and more advanced archery system was developed. As a person who makes and uses the atlatl, I will be the first to tell you that in high brush areas or wooded areas dense with saplings or undergrowth, my atlatl isn’t much good at any decent range where my arrows are very good in the same setting. The atlatl darts “flex” all the way to the target, and the movement flex of a six foot dart can be 4 inches or more, striking bushes etc and being thrown off course.
When referring to accuracy, realize that in some of the main international competitions, the “bulls-eye” for the atlatl is 24cm (about 9.5") in diameter and the distances are 15 and 20 meters (about 49’ and 65.5’) Those ranges aren’t squat to the archer.

good, and accurate response overall. You have an understanding of the weapon system.
