Yes, I learned this lesson the hard way while visiting Guatemala. I don’t know why I didn’t think to check what the fees were beforehand (I was young), but I never liked to have a lot of cash on me so I was constantly making small withdrawls here and there. I was between there and Mexico for 6 months.
Imagine my dismay when I got back home and saw my bank statement!
Eh. Some friends of mine got stuck literally penniless and actually traded their jeans for food on a certain forbidden island nation because their bank figured that their cards were stolen in Mexico- and then they managed to miss their flight home. Imagine their mother’s surprise when she got a phone call saying “you need to find a way to wire money to here immediately. We are in Cuba. We missed our plane. We don’t have any money. Don’t worry.”
I’ve always used the “send something to customer service” button on my B of A online banking webpage saying “I’m gonna be in this region for this long, so don’t be surprised by charges from there”. They’ve always responded well.
