IIRC, the first female cosmonaut was up there very briefly, and the next one didn’t fly until after the shuttle toilet had been described, so as a WAG, I’d suspect that those peskie Rooskie’s simply copied that for use on Mir. Somewhere around here, I’ve got a link to a Soviet space website that I’ll have to dig up and see if it says anything about it.
