I had actually considered Thompson, but dismissed him because of the “Not a combat veteran” DQ. After reading his bio more closely, I guess he technically didn’t see combat, even though he ran ordnance supply operations during the Spanish-American War. ---

It looked to me like he was pretty much a desk man his entire time in the Army. Wiki says he worked out of Tampa during that war, and during WW I he was in charge of small-arms production. ---
