Aung San Suu Kyi's Release Imminent?

I believe you’re wrong about her being rearrested. You are correct that is all about PR though. I also believe it has less to do with cooperation than realizing it is in her better interests to keep a low profile.

I would like to believe you are right about her not being arrested again. Time will tell. But there is no way I believe she could ever keep quiet. It’s simply not in her nature.

And presumably a “low profile” would not entail her speaking to thousands of supporters about an hour and a half from now like she plans to do.

I guess so, if you define her “better interests” as staying out of imprisonment. She has for decades consistently demonstrated that her definition of her “better interests” involve fighting for the people of Burma to have a democratic government even if it means she is imprisoned again. So there you differ.

Want to bet she’ll be back in prison about half an hour after that? I really just don’t understand what the junta is thinking. It’s one thing to let her out of prison, but to let her address crowds, especially when they know she’s going to say bad stuff about them? What the Junta is doing about her just makes no sense.

No one, and I mean no one, EVER understands what the junta is thinking.

She hasn’t started her address yet, it’s 12:10pm there now, but BBC says it is coming soon.

Any news yet? I can’t find anything. BBC is still saying she’s preparing to speak, but that’s been up for almost an hour.

She’s spoken, and with magnanimity for her captors. “They treated me well, I wish they would treat the people the same.”

It’s not like she’s going to raly the masses to storm the government, I guess. We’ll have to see how this plays out over time.

DARN IT! I could have made a mean 50 cents off of you, Captain.

Wonderful. An HIV clinic that Aung San Suu Kyi visited two days ago, where she called for better funding to buy antiretroviral drugs, is now being shut down by the authorities. The 80 patients have all been told their monthly resident permits won’t be renewed, and they and the staff have to get out now. Story here.

It’s hard to tell if they’re planning to lean on everyone whom Suu Kyi comes into contact with or they’re particularly peeved that she drew attention to the Aids situation, which is a touchy one for the junta.

And after spending weeks in Bangkok trying to get visa, her son has finally been granted one by the Burmese Embassy. Story here. Before her recent release, it had been years since she spoke with him or anyone else in her family, as she was not allowed a telephone.

But still always one to put a damper on things, the junta has suspended eight local publications for featuring her prominently in news and photos. Story here.

A small update: Suu Kyi’s son has now left Burma, but the big news is a movie biography is in the works, directed by Luc Besson. Story here.

Malaysia actress and former James Bond girl Michelle Yeoh has been tapped to play The Lady. Some location shooting has already been done here in Thailand.

Interesting. I think I’d like to see it.

I thought I would mention the website of Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, the National League for Democracy, is up and running now. See it here.

Hurray!

Is it accessible in Burma?

Not sure. I’ll have to check into that.

Checked with someone I’d hoped would know. All he said was “Probably” since they’d just arrest her again if they didn’t like the content even if it was just for outside world.

Small update: Michelle Yeoh has been deported and banned from Burma, due to her role in the film.

It’d be funny if it weren’t so sad. Can’t say I’m surprised though. It is just the Burmese government playing true to form.

Aung SanSuu Kyi is also planning to embark upon a political tour upcountry soon, of the type that got her into trouble the last time. The government is warning her to cease all political activites NOW, but she’s ignoring them.
