Autism and parental bonding?

The only thing parenting relates to with autism is ability to function despite the challenges.
Like with any other disorder, autistic children can be taught effective methods of coping with their challenges.

There is no causal link.

The autistic spectrum is actually quite broad. My son (4) was diagnosed with minor autism about a year ago and, other than some sensitivity to certain loud noises, some social awkwardness and repetitive behaviors (much of which he has grown out of), you really wouldn’t notice. Otherwise, he’s a happy-go-lucky, affectionate, chatty little boy. OTOH, I have a friend whose child is totally non-verbal.

FWIW, our kids get a shit-ton of attention.

I think about the business thing too. I think my kid’s best bet is going to be programming from my basement. He’s smart enough to do the work, but I don’t know if he’ll ever be independent.

Please, please stop thinking about it and start now. There’s never gonna be this great time in the future to do it. Just start, it will be a few years before it’s worked out to some kind of stable result.

Amazon does have the mechanical Turk thing, idk if it’s any good but starting some small actions on the path you’re thinking and really pursuing and researching all the possibilities would be so amazing.

I have no idea of either of your kids’ exact circumstances to give any advice on what form it would take but I only wish more parents thought this way.

Autism, however, tends to run in families.

I’m on the spectrum, and my father certainly was. My mother I’m not sure about, but she is certainly nowhere near ‘normal’.

I grew up at a time when ASD wasn’t known, and I got zero support as a child, and almost zero attention or affection.

I’m sorry, i don’t understand,
What does this have to do with what I said?

You said there is no causal link. I pointed out that there may not be causation, but there may be correlation, because there is a genetic component in ASD.

Ah ok, I’m with you, yeah definitely a genetic correlation.
I was responding in the context of no link to parenting though, not parents.

This was my training as well

This article gives a bit more of the refutation of this idea

Most of the early ideas about the “cause” of the behaviors described as autistic were based on Freudian psychology, and therefore somewhat based on evidence other than reality.

It is my opinion, based on long experience observing folks with this diagnosis is that they are misdiagnosed and the cause of the behaviors is some other neurological issue that goes undetected. It is important for parents to make sure the “experts” they are consulting are in fact making certain there are no underlying medical conditions.

Let me get this straight. You are questioning the entire diagnosis then. You are going further than objecting to the behaviors being part of the diagnosis, if I’m reading correctly. Then you have to also account for sensory issues and impairments with language, because those do not fall under the umbrella of behavior.

Are you talking to yourself?? Or are there two of you?

Am i the only one confused?

In my experience with a child on the spectrum, is that you go through the whole neurology “ruling out other causes” thing. There are rare genetic disorders that present as ASD. And, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a spectrum that can entail geeky/computer nerd types to highly non-functioning non-verbal and anywhere inbetween. We did quite a few neurological tests, including some that can with grants to cover the costs to get data. At the end of the day, in my layman understanding, even if an underlying neurological cause was identified, for the purpose of my child it wouldn’t mean any difference in how to address (ABA).

China bambina is ASD non-specified. Although in our case, it is probably due to hypoxic damage as Twin B at birth. Impossible to say with today’s technology, and probably one of those unanswerable questions. (That said, with some pretty awesome coaches at the Outdoorsforall Foundation, she was able to go down the longest run with a black diamond start at the ski resort near us *twice *yesterday.)

I have Asperger’s (most people think I’m lying if I tell them) and have studied the causes a bit. Apparently there’s a chromosome (I think it’s 16…) where abnormalities occur that are related to autism, ADHD, migraines, bipolar disorder and other things. While some vaccines are believed to cause autism, I think it’s primarily genetic and biological. My mom was wonderful and my twin and I still had autism!

No vaccines are believed to cause autism by knowledgeable people who have studied the issue. That link has been exhaustively studied and refuted.

Awesome!

Or even sane people who have even examined the claims in passing.
